Ah, the time of year when I find myself pondering the deep questions of taxonomy in the grocery store.

Graham Crackers should be found in the aisle of:

Crackers?
Cookies?
Baking?
Candy?
Other?

What say you, I want to know!

News (sometimes) covers the big things, like judicial hearings and press conferences. But even though we know that there is more suffering behind each of those, it just doesn't hit people unless they hear what is actually happening on the ground. This is critical work.
I spent most of today seeking to meet with one of the many victims of ICE raids currently jailed in Downtown LA.

While @chrclla.bsky.social focuses its efforts on impact litigation, my team boosts efforts on the ground whenever possible.

What I saw speaks to the crisis in LA & beyond.

Crockett: I am tired of the white tears. When you compare me to Marjorie Taylor Greene or me to Lauren Boebert, there is no comparison. So the only people that are crying are the mediocre white boys that have been beaten out by people that historically have had to work so, so much harder

Safe consumption sites, ftw! This saves lives, folks.
This is super dope! I hope future sites aren't met with resistance from the incoming administration. 🤞
Fantastic news out of Rhode Island. Opening their #OVERDOSE PREVENTION SITE!

It's kind of amazing that we showed we could cut child poverty in half for roughly 100 billion/year (absolute peanuts in a 7 trillion dollar budget), did it for a year, and then just stopped doing it.
The food security report is out, and it's bad news: 13.5% of households were food insecure in 2023, up from 12.8% in 2022. This is what happens when you abruptly end "pandemic" supports that should have been there all along.

Household Food Security in the United States in 2023
An estimated 13.5 percent of households (18.0 million) were food insecure in 2023, meaning they had difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members because of a lac...

As someone working in conservation and ecology, I want to add that learning to see the world differently, with new eyes, is one of the most beautiful and rewarding aspects of ecological training and expertise. We live in a world of wounds AND wonder, both of which are often invisible to others.
#Ecologists suffer from a burden of knowledge unlike that of most careers... Not only are we often underpaid, but we are also forced to watch the things we most care about be destroyed by apathetic or malicious humans who live blissfully ignorant to the importance of the natural world.... #ecogrief

Ok, by request, here are my talking points for the seminar on countering misinformation. Note that this is a graduate course for STEM (almost entirely neuroscience)grad students & postdocs so while it's not preaching to the choir it's definitely teaching them a new song. 1/

This is a good reminder that a poll is a combination of who people believe they will vote for (actual survey) which has a margin of error but is fairly solid and then sampling of those based on who the polls think will actually vote. The model is the least reliable and most opaque.
If NYT/Siena is making you panic, take note that Harris is +12 among women and age 18-29, but NYT fiddles with the numbers to suppress them.

NYT assumed electorate:
52% women
13% age 18-29

Actual electorate 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020:
54-55% women
15-16% age 18-29

4 years ago there was so much we didn't know. Couldn't know. But didn't pretend we didn't know anything, that we didn't have the ability to make better, more informed decisions than we did.

This is a wild ride of mendacity. So many "wait... Wut?!?" moments starting with the fact that Florida seems to have Public Defender as a partisan elected position?

The American Psychological Association does not have the most sterling record on human rights, to put it politely, but it is fantastic to see them stepping up on a timely and urgent issue.
The APA is coming out SWINGING, utterly rejecting the stigma and misinformation around trans healthcare, calling for a total repeal of all anti-trans healthcare bills, & going for the throat of transphobic lies!

I know it's not the same as gov't policy, but this is still great.

This passed 153-9.

This is a problem I've seen first hand many times not only in academia but also private industry. Our rewards are often aligned towards answers we desire rather than process we need. We need to reward people for doing the work the right way, not giving us the answer that feels best at the time.

This is just one of the reasons we need a guaranteed income program. Everywhere it has been tried, it has worked. The monthly payments on the earned income tax credit during covid lockdown? Biggest reduction in childhood poverty ever. We can and have done it. Now make it permanent.
This is heart-breaking stuff.
