About 18 months after, BlueSky clearly offers the superior user experience but that’s done nothing to attract and retain audiences.

Really happy to hear that BlueSky has opened to the public, but I'm not going to lie: generally worried that this platform missed the boat with a private invite-only beta that lasted too long and not enough uniqueness or differentiation to standout from Twitter/X and, sadly, Meta Threads. Let's see!

1. Bluesky doesn’t downrank links
2. You can choose your own algorithm from among thousands
3. The whole app is open source

This keeps it a free and open platform by design, leading to better click-throughs and traffic to your site.

We 💙 the open web.

I exit founders for a living.

It takes a special personality to bring something into existence: grit, passion, vision. But most Founders lack the self-awareness to embrace the limitations to scale their creations. That's where people like me enter.

This is genuinely terrifying. I know the network effect accounts for the primary reason why the incumbents like Twitter and Facebook cannot really be dislodged by “better” alternatives, but outrages like these should be real wake up calls to anyone who values a rules-based world order.
If it pans out that Musk did indeed take action against Yulia Navalnaya for criticism of Putin, then I really don't know how anyone who could claim to be "pro Democracy" could remain on the platform.

If you do not want the compulsory Microsoft Windows 10 or Windows 11 deployment of Copilot AI, this handy "nopilot" registry file adds two line items that remove taskbar integration and disables copilot on Windows altogether. H/T @poison-sumac.bsky.social
Any of y'all using Windows might want to follow the instructions here to avoid getting friggin' AI integration, which is coming to Windows 10 shortly (and may already be in Windows 11, I dunno): cohost.org/ceryl/post/3...

“If you are unwilling to disrupt your business, there will always be someone willing to do it for you.”

Netflix’s Marc Randolph reminds us how Blockbuster refused to partner when it was comfortable and on top. The lesson is clear:

Always aim to put yourself out of business.

since this is coming up, I have nothing but appreciation for Mastodon and activitypub. We had another approach we wanted to take and that’s it

it’s pretty normal for folks to root for their communities but it’s not zero sum and we should be rooting for every baby turtle make it off the beach

People may not appreciate just how revolutionary @atproto.com is. If it succeeds, it’s like Mastodon with better onboarding and stronger adoption. A federation without defederating, with radical transparency and individual controls for all users.

It will be the undoing of all other social media! 💫

The Vikings didn’t actually wear horned helmets, but ancient Danes in the Nordic Bronze Age did wear this fantastic ceremonial headgear around 900 BC.

Lonely pet parrots find friendship through video chats, a new study finds
Parrots are known to be chatty, social animals. But when they're kept as pets, they can get lonely. A group of scientists found that video chatting with other parrots helps them feel less so.

The more you learn about @atproto.com's plans for Federation and Moderation, the more you realize that Bluesky and other servers like it are just solving this problem:

"What if there were an easy way to welcome new people to Mastodon and teach them to stay?"

Blocks and Likes are all public on the protocol, because they need to be universally respected. But Mutes are server-specific and would only carry over if the right permissions get set. 🔥
yes they’re server specific, though they could transfer if you authorize it between servers.

you: “hey old server, send my mute list to my new server”
old server: *sends to new server*
new server: “ok”

Blocking is here! Radically transparent, like Likes, all blocks are public and @atproto.com API calls allow you to easily see everyone’s blocks. Expect decentralized suggested block lists as an early app coming out of this! Killer implementation.

You needed blocks. We cleared our calendars to finish building out blocks.

Blocking has shipped to Bluesky web app users and will be available in mobile shortly (version 1.25, when it passes App/Play Store review — hopefully tomorrow morning).

You can access this feature now at staging.bsky.app.
