I wrote an op-ed on the world-class STEM research ecosystem in the United States, and how this ecosystem is now under attack on multiple fronts by the current administration: newsletter.ofthebrave.org/p/im-an-awar...
I’m an award-winning mathematician. Trump just cut my funding.
The “Mozart of Math” tried to stay out of politics. Then it came for his research.

on the surface Elon’s purchase of Twitter has made the need for open networks (somewhat) clear to consumers, but I’m not convinced this was net more effective for the movement for open protocols
Did Elon buying Twitter actually help the open internet and the movement for social media protocols?
Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover might be the best thing to happen to apps built on open protocols.
But @karaswisher.bsky.social tells @rabble.nz that people won’t switch unless these apps are more convenient.

just watched a video on Obsidian that described it as "future-proof," i.e. it uses open file formats so you can easily migrate to a different note-taking app & you're not locked in. could borrow that to explain bluesky
decentralized → open → billionaire-proof → future-proof
decentralized → open → billionaire-proof → future-proof

personal update: today is my last day with the Bluesky team!
this is bittersweet news to share, but the great thing about an open network is you never really have to leave. I’ll be rooting for Bluesky and atproto from the outside 🫡💙

Bored Cow animal-free dairy milk review: it has the creaminess of whole milk but not the sweetness. the flavor is milder but the difference is less obvious in coffee. it's not a true replacement for whole milk yet but i'm glad someone is working on it

The @cpsc.gov, a federal agency dedicated to keeping unsafe products out of our homes, is now under threat, say lawmakers and safety advocates.

kevin roose literally spends 75% of the article defensively preempting the obvious criticism (see comments on original post) and yet people are still mad at him (the author, not the featured ai researcher). not beating the "didn't read the article" allegations
“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”
Should We Start Taking the Welfare of A.I. Seriously?
As artificial intelligence systems become smarter, one A.I. company is trying to figure out what to do if they become conscious.

i still think domain verification is a great solution but as someone who often explains DNS to large bureaucratic institutions these days, trust me when i say that quick and easily recognizable account verification is necessary too. especially for verifying authenticity in moments of breaking news
Bluesky’s new verification process launches today. It mixes the old-school, Twitter-style blue check bestowed by the platform with a more decentralized option for trusted organizations. www.wired.com/story/bluesk...

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

Listening to @emilyliu.me doing an amazing job describing the benefits of an open protocol to a room full of non-technical journalists. It’s such a hard thing to do - but real examples and relatable stories go a long way. #atprotocol #bluesky
Really really great to see the open social web in the big hall at #ijf25.
