Dropped everything to publish this new op-ed to @mongabay.com by former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson

She calls Bill Gates' new essay on #climatechange dangerous & false

“The great challenge of our time is to build a future where every person can thrive on a healthy planet,” Robinson argues:
No, Bill Gates, we don’t have to choose between people & planet (commentary)
Bill Gates has long been a leading voice in the global response to human health and climate change. His climate investments and advocacy have helped drive innovation, expand access to clean energy, an...

This is a self-serving view in both its preening tone and in ignoring actual *studies of* generative AI’s effects on reading, writing, research, and thinking.

It is quite possible to be informed about AI and reject it. Insisting otherwise is just being a missionary : “Have you heard the Good News?”
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

The true cost of “solar power at night” with Reflect Orbital

If you played SimCity 2000, you might've loved the idea of "beaming power from space" down to Earth.

Reflect Orbital took that idea, tech-bro'd it, and now could end "night" as we know it.

Solar power has the disadvantage that there's no Sun at night. Satellite startup Reflect Orbital wants to change that, but at what cost?

This is a national disgrace

It should be a national scandal
Unbelievable story of Afghan refugee, a highly vetted fluent English speaker who helped the US against the Taliban and now lives here with his US citizen kids, declared “illegal” and perhaps about to be shipped home by the Trump admin to his likely death
He supported America’s war, escaped Afghanistan and started a family in the U.S.

Then ICE arrested him.

If he is deported, he expects the Taliban to kill him.

Monstrous.

"federal agents detained nearly every resident of the 130-unit building—including children and babies—placing them in zip ties and separating them by race into vans for more than two hours early Tuesday morning."
Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Media outlets should be telling us how they will prepare for this potential Treason. State governments should be telling us. Activists should be developing plans.
