I designed some 3D printed components to make a very inexpensive version of the @earthscope.org Earthquake Machine that hold a phone. It also allows for multiple variables such as elasticity (size of bands), surface roughness (grits of sandpaper) and mass (hollow brick to add weights).

I spoke with a hurricane modeler who was just fired from the branch of NOAA that keeps weather models running. He got a form letter like hundreds of others telling him he was losing his job in an hour. This bodes very poorly for American forecasting. Gift link: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...
