We are all very comfortable using the 1930s/40s German public as our case study in collective guilt. I think more fruitful and relevant examples can be found in the United States’ own history: Indian genocide, slavery, Jim Crow, Chinese exclusion, Japanese internment, etc from the 17th century on.
