”The science is clear — people in more-equal societies are more trusting and more likely to protect the environment than are those in unequal, consumer-driven ones.”

The U.S. was a great project with good intentions until unregulated capitalism failed.

This is a great ad. In a „this could only be made by humans“ kind of way.
I had to screen record this one, it’s so bad. A visual artist who has Claude develop a “shot list” from his notes. Embarrassing. Also pretty interesting how little of this is about AI? Three years in and this is the best they’ve got. Embarrassing! Shameful!

I really love this Vincent Van Gogh quote:

"To do good work one must eat well, be well housed, have one's fling from time to time, smoke one's pipe, and drink one's coffee in peace."

No romanticizing the starving artist. Van Gogh said UBI all the way.

What’s interesting about this graph is that it looks like the population income distribution in a late stage capitalist system.
Check out our new insect decline paper. By analysing 36 yrs of German ground beetle distribution data, we show:
- ~80% of species have declined, with significant declines for >50%.
- The decline was similar across species traits and threatened status.

ICE vehicles waste a whopping 80% of the energy in their fuel.

Electric vehicles are propelled by entirely different mechanisms. Energy enters the vehicle as electricity, which directly powers the drivetrain: EVs need not convert one form of energy to another resulting in much higher efficiency.

Turkey did it without hesitation.

Hot take: Apple introducing this whole new UI system and at the same time time cluttering the system settings with various options to undo this new look is an indication of how lost their design and product teams are.

Great thread overall by @jonasnahm.com

I tend to think that the US withdrawal overall will open the doors for more instability and conflict.

But. Much of the US dominated order is based on capitalist colonialism and fossil fuel supremacy. All that can’t end soon enough.
11/11 At the moment when climate action is most urgent and clean energy is becoming the cheapest power source globally, the US is walking away from the ambition to lead (or participate) in that transition. China is ready to fill that vacuum.

This is why the #Solarpunk movement is so important.

It is a way to get people excited about what an ecologically harmonious future could look like.

Our species is very story-driven and that's why we need stories about radical hope to keep us fighting the good fight.

Couldn't agree more.

This ought to also be major part of any discussion about #degrowth. Being pro-degrowth doesn't mean being anti-technology. It's all about prudent, deliberate and democratically determined usage and deployment of tech.
Luddites weren't anti-tech.

They were against technology being used by the capitalist class to capture wealth at the expense of the worker.

I am a Luddite, and a tech enthusiast. They're not in opposition. I want technology that makes MY life better, not that sells my life piecemeal to corps.
I hate crypto, I hate online gambling, I hate AI, I hate pay-later, I hate subscription models, I hate the gig economy, I hate ring cameras, I hate drones, I hate self checkout.

I don't want to come off as a luddite but capitalism's hold on tech sucks.

Why #degrowth is en existential imperative, in one post.

4.2°C by 2100 is possibly an extinction-level event, 2.7°C by 2100 is "just" catastrophic.
Roughly:
If emissions rise 1% per year: 4.2 ºC by 2100
If emissions fall 1% per year: 2.7 ºC by 2100.
These are the best estimates, but the uncertainty is fairly large.

Paris is laser focused on becoming the world's most livable city, apparently.
Yes!!!
