Protecting people is my job. No one—not this administration, not ICE—will keep me from doing it.

I sat down with @newyorker.com to talk about why I’m not backing down in the face of political intimidation.

MLK was only 39 when he was killed. Growing up, I thought that was old. But I’m 43 now and I’m stunned by the burden he shouldered at such a young age. I’m also a lot more aware of how hard it is, at any age, to carry the hopes and dreams of an oppressed people on your shoulders, as so many do.

it’s kinda bizarre watching people fall for the media lie that “defund the police” was a losing platform for the democrats when it was never their platform to begin with.

"You need liberal democracy to protect what journalism is. And I think part of the problem is that the traditional media doesn't know what to do as we slip further and further away from a pure liberal democracy."

King knew our liberation here at home is connected to the liberation of people abroad from US empire. That's actually honoring him to get that connection.

LBJ signed the Civil Rights laws, and that mattered. But those laws were made politically unavoidable by years of mass organizing, and non-violent resistance led by Martin Luther King Jr.

Sustained civic pressure is what creates change, not waiting for benevolence from power. 🇺🇸

Before people get weird and ahistorical, they killed Dr King because of his stances on socialism/communism and anti-imperialism, not integration. He made the “I Have a Dream” speech in 1965, they killed him in 1968. He would not have thought your warmongering faves were “progress.”

I'm referring to North Lawndale in my quoted skeet, a community that's been strategically impoverished for so long (but is quietly gentrifying right now) that Dr. King moved his family here in 1968 as part of his activism.

On this MLK Day, let’s remember that Dr. King believed in America not as it is, but as it could be. Hope is not passive—it’s a commitment to keep bending the arc toward justice. The promise of America is still ours to fulfill.

Perhaps the most striking testimony, during discussions over whether to designate a federal holiday for MLK, came from a third-grade teacher from Indianapolis, Ms. Patricia Brown, who anticipated what the holiday would mean for future generations:

A schoolteacher anticipated in 1979 how creating the holiday would prove meaningful.

In re-electing a known racist, misogynist in Donald Trump, white America has wholly failed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream.

Any white person who can’t see this is not just complicit, but is also actively harming the cause of dismantling racism in America.

I simply cannot put this more plainly.🇺🇸
