Lots of transit news from BART director Victor Flores - including that the BART board has voted to use standard gauge for the 2nd set of transbay tubes.

This will open up the option for Caltrain, High Speed Rail, and Amtrak to cross between downtown San Francisco and the East Bay in the future.
It's been a while since my last BART newsletter. Between my last job, BART, and studying for the LSAT, time has been limited, but that's no excuse!

-Initial data indicates the recall —despite getting some prog engagement—was driven by conservative voters who refuse to acknowledge we live in a city and deny our climate emergency.
-More D4 voters voted yes on prop K than yes on recall. This vote was not a referendum on the park.

Four years ago, SSR was started to make the great highway permanently car-free. Now, sunset dunes is one of SF's most popular parks. Like the embarcadero and central freeway removals, there may be more fights ahead, but we're not going back.

The most impactful housing bill in California history is on the 1 yard line. It has passed the assembly and the senate vote is TODAY!

Right now is your last chance to call your state senator and tell them to support building more housing near transit!

California HSR guaranteed $20b in state funding over the next 20 years. There’s still a funding gap in getting to Gilroy and SF, but steady funding will make that much easier to close — amp.sacbee.com/news/politic...
Legislature, Gov. Gavin Newsom agree to fund high-speed rail through 2045
Under the terms of a still-unauthorized deal, high-speed rail would receive $1 billion per year.

Imagine results like this in the Bay Area.

We need congestion pricing here to make it easier and safer for everyone - including drivers - to get around and to help transit ridership grow.
CONGESTION PRICING IN #NYC IS WORKING.

Since Jan 2025:

⚠️ 17.6 million fewer vehicles entered Manhattan
⚠️ Crashes are down 14%
⚠️ Traffic injuries down 15%
✅ Subway ridership up 9%
✅ Bus ridership up 13%

The $9 fee goes to funding mass transit capital improvements.

Congestion pricing is one of the biggest policy successes of the past decade.
You remember the dire predictions about congestion pricing inducing more traffic and higher emissions in the South Bronx. Well none of them have come to pass, according to data analyzed by Charlie Komanoff.

If your downtown still has many wide and fast one-way streets, then your priority is to move cars as fast as possible thru a weak downtown. It’s NOT to create a vibrant downtown, help downtown retailers, keep people safe, support walkability and accessibility, reduce pollution, etc. #TrafficSewers

Yes Gov Newsom is an 🫏 for attempting to reneg on the $750M loan to keep Bay Area transit afloat.

But also remember that MTC postponed our regional transit ballot measure in 2024 to make way for an affordable housing measure, but then that didn’t happen either.

Leadership failure on all levels.

Who rides transit in the Bay Area? 2023-2024 data is available at public.tableau.com/app/profile/...

Except for ferries, the typical transit rider makes less money than the average Bay Area resident - this is even true for Caltrain, which has the highest average rider income other than the ferries.

Absolute greenwashing.

This project greatly harms the environment by adding a highway lane and inducing many more vehicle miles and greenhouse gas emissions.

This will harm the marshlands and wildlife by furthering climate change.

Shame on everyone supporting this.
Today’s passage of AB 697 marks a major advance for long-running efforts to start work on a suite of projects to enhance North Bay marshlands and wildlife habitats, reduce flooding, improve traffic flow along Highway 37, and introduce transit service between Vallejo and Novato.
