This Day in Labor History: October 30, 1837. Nicholas Farwell, a train engineer toiling for the Boston and Worcester Rail Road Corporation fell off a train while at work and had his hand crushed by the train. Farwell sued the company for damages. Judge said, nope! Nothing for the injured workers!

Driving away foreign investment in the US seems like a really, really bad policy. Hopefully, the Hyundai disaster won't be repeated, but a lot of damage has likely already been done. Issues regarding employment should have been dealt with in advance.

The thing is, it is the nature of reactionary psychology to believe on a deep brainstem level that *everyone* acts this way, that everyone is out for themselves and their own advantage, that all talk of principles is bullshit. It is fundamental to their worldview.

What's up with getting rolling on next year's flu vaccine? Canceling the planning meetings for this is a BIG deal. As with so much else, our politicians should be screaming about this and bringing as much pressure to bear as possible.

This is why we have debt. It’s tax cuts for the wealthy not programs for tbe poor. There are more sources and you can find them easily online.

Tax Cuts Are Primarily Responsible for the Increasing Debt Ratio
Without the Bush and Trump tax cuts, debt as a percentage of the economy would be declining permanently.

Trump is deprioritizing the deportation of actually dangerous people on order to ensure that all undocumented people are afraid.

And he’s prioritizing deportations of non-dangerous people over enforcement of all other crimes.

The man is committed to his racism.

Two thoughts:
1. This is a really good story.
2. I know from experience that it's hard to get people to read stories about energy efficiency. So when there's a good one like this, share it far and wide.

one of my favorite stories I did at Vox was about Jimmy Carter and his role in energy efficiency standards at the DOE. Truly underappreciated legacy that tangibly improved everyday life www.vox.com/climate/2023...
Refrigerators have gotten really freaking good. Thanks, Jimmy Carter.

kind of insane that these are the lengths the right would go to win, meanwhile the democratic party's best pitch is campaigning with Liz Cheney
Remember the right-wing plot to sabotage Jimmy Carter’s re-election by urging Iran to hold American hostages longer? You don’t? It’s a shocking example of the American right’s treachery that more people should know about. (Gift link to 2023 NYT story.)

A nuclear reactor was melting down. Jimmy Carter came to the rescue.
In 1952, Lt. Jimmy Carter, then 28, was one of the few people in the world qualified to enter a damaged nuclear reactor and help take it apart.

All right, a quick 🧵. (Deluding myself into thinking they're going to be quick is part of the process.)

So, what is a good & complete federal climate policy? IMO, it's a stool with three legs:
1. Massive investments.
2. Regulatory reform. (Big bucket.)
3. A backstop price on carbon.

I think this has been a problem for a long time. Most of the 'regulations' that most people encounter are made by states and cities; Republicans running for federal office then promise to 'cut red tape', but only a small fraction of businesses face federal regulations at all.
One thing I’ve been chewing on, and should probably write a longer piece to work out, is that Harris was largely punished for the choices of local Democrats in cities who have far more control over stuff like rent than the President, and how change in the party starts with cleaning up that level.
