Sustainability by numbers update on the carbon footprint of ChatGPT and Gemini!
I really appreciated that @hannahritchie.bsky.social is following the developments (and also distinguishes between individual-level impact vs. AI/data centers as a whole).
What's the carbon footprint of using ChatGPT or Gemini? [August 2025 update]
A new study from Google suggests its Gemini LLM uses around 0.24 Wh per text query. That's the same energy as using a microwave for one second.

Gaza is now officially in IPC Phase 5, the final stage of hunger. Designated as 'catastrophe'.

A further 67 of the starving were killed by IDF soldiers yesterday trying to access food. Witnesses say the victims had their hands held in the air.

One day, everyone will have always been against this.

"Be kind to yourself and hard on the system."
Burnout is clinically understood as a combo of 6 factors—work overload, lack of control, insufficient rewards, breakdown in community, absence of fairness, & value conflicts—and only a fraction of it is under your control. Burnout is a systemic problem, so be kind to yourself and hard on the system.
Hey gang I've had to learn recently that the whole "burning out" thing is real so if you find yourself being panicked every waking second that you're not working on something, despite those seconds being very rare, you should maybe listen to the signals and take an intentional break before you crash

There's no place for institutional finance in rental markets. It's a predatory extraction machine that robs the poor and middle.

But one thing I'd add: we should stop calling these people "investors". They don't "invest". They buy up and milk existing assets. 🧵

The go-to resource on the cost of Brexit.

Surprise, surprise - detaching from one of the world’s largest markets right in front of your door created a big hit to UK GDP, trade and investment.
The Constitution Society and Federal Trust asked me to do a survey of the evidence on the economics of Brexit, nine years on from the vote.
Hopefully it's a helpful reference. Short answer: the consensus was right - a large hit to GDP, trade and investment.
