Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age 💙

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

The image shows fourty-four annular (ring-shaped) translucent turquoise blue glass beads strung on a modern circular thread and displayed against a black background. The glass beads were found in 1885 when a farmer ploughed up a cremation urn at Kongehøj in Denmark. The urn broke and was found to contain burnt bones, the 44 blue glass beads and two gold spiral rings. Recent analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq), indicating far-reaching trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.

She often played mothers on TV, but she insisted she was a lot more interesting than her screen alter egos. “I love rock ‘n’ roll and going to concerts,” she told the Chicago Tribune in 1994. “I have driven army tanks and flown in hot-air balloons, and I go plane-gliding — the ones with no motors. I do lots of things that don’t go hand-in-hand with my image.” She told the outlet that she’d recently done a voiceover part for Ren and Stimpy because it was her favorite show. “I am such a fan, I try never to miss an episode,” she said.

Spotted off the Cornish coast at Falmouth a few years back. A rare case of Fata Morgana, a mirage caused by special atmospheric conditions that cause light to bend. So, whilst explained by science, it's still pretty strange!

Pair of terracotta boots from an Early Geometric period cremation burial of a woman in the Athenian Agora, c. 900 BC.

These lovely model terracotta booties give us a glimpse into Iron Age footwear some 3,000 years ago in Athens.

My photo shows a small pair of terracotta boots which are dark brown in colour with rounded toes and thick cream-coloured soles. They have flaring high sides which would cover the ankle and which have an open front. There is cream decoration over the top part of the vamp. The boots were excavated in 1948 from a woman’s richly-furnished cremation burial in a small Early Geometric period family-plot on the ancient Agora, Athens.

A collage made up of 10 photos I’ve taken in museums of ancient Egyptian blue hippo figurines. They hippos are made of Egyptian faience with is a ceramic material made of quartz, decorated in black pigment with depictions of Nile river plants, e.g. lotus flowers. These figurines are associated with the life-giving Nile and regeneration. It’s thought they were placed in Middle Kingdom tombs some 4,000 years ago to help with the rebirth of the deceased in the afterlife.

I just have to post this #iceage masterpiece from time to time: A tiny (3.7 cm) but amazing figurine of a woolly mammoth carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago.
Found in the Vogelherd cave on the Swabian Jura, south-west Germany.
