What am I about? Foremost, my passion is loving and understanding the American West. I've been lucky to inhabit and explore a lot of its less familiar corners. This is a tiny sample representing four of my particular fascinations: wild rivers, geology, the Inland Northwest and the Great Basin.
“Why so glorious in the fall? Biology and astronomy reach a showy crescendo, and who could it be for? .… Maybe it’s for no one, a happenstance of grace the world can’t help making, as if divinity found a crack in the end of October and is gushing through.” -Craig Childs

I'm not much of a salesman, but I do have photography calendars available. This year I went with abstract nature images. The cat knows you want one!

Something small, Bufo exsul, a tiny toad that lives only at a set of springs surrounded by vast stretches of California desert, isolated from other amphibians, adrift in its own watery cosmos.

A nine-banded armadillo standing on its hind legs with its head slightly tilted to regard me from its vantage point behind some blurry foliage in the foreground.

November retrospective, 5, 10 and 15 years ago (apparently I made literally not one photo in Nov '24, so we're skipping one year ago): Selway River, ID; Eureka Valley, CA; Bandelier Nat Monument, NM

Dunno what everyone's complaining about, this Christmas mural is totally on-brand for 2025.
This mural has gone up in Kingston, ostensibly for Christmas but AI has ensured it's actually to celebrate the return of our dark lord Cthulhu

This is the new startup magazine I write geology pieces and photograph for. Idaho folks, gonna say it straight up, we'd really appreciate your buying some copies, off the shelf or subscription!

I haven't been here for a long time, oops! So busy making Idaho's best magazine. The Winter issue is on the way to stores now. Preview the sample at www.seasonsofthe208.com. It really is amazing! #magazine #idaho #photography #Idahostories #idahomagazine #seasonsofthe208

As someone else whose intro to falconry involved a goshawk (not a beginner bird!), respect to Claire Foy! Can't wait to see this film.
Oh this is LOVELY. Claire talking about her role in H is for Hawk. She is not only an astonishing actor but an extraordinarily accomplished natural hawk-handler, entirely in tune with the birds

Made this one tonight, it's very easy and I really liked the unusual combo of tamarind, pomegranate and dill.

Beautiful light on a splendid toad!
Our friend the African Green Toad lives in northern Africa from Morocco to Egypt and has a subspecies that lives on several Italian islands! Their large, oval-shaped parotoid glands make them easy to tell apart from other closely related toads! (photo by svenhop)

I lived in this area about 18 years ago and loved it. This is one of the best Needle Rock images I've seen!
I dug out an older image for todays share. This is Needle Rock near Crawford, Colorado under one of the most beautiful sunsets I saw during my time in the state - and there were a lot to choose from!

We’re snailposting, post your snails.
This chap was one of hundreds on a spring hike near the Lochsa River in northern Idaho. That region seems to see a snail boom every spring.
