Head Start, the preschool program that the US Administration prepares to terminate, has a *negative* cost to taxpayers

Yes: Public funds saved from reduced welfare+incarceration costs, & higher taxed incomes, far exceed costs

Terminating Head Start is ideological waste—the opposite of efficiency.

Update:

Note that Head Start was born out of the Civil Rights Movement, a federal investment in America' promise of equal opportunity & in our children from the most disadvantaged communities & families.

As someone who benefited from head start, first in my family to go and graduate from college.

It would NOT have been possible through normal means.

Head start not only gets your foot in the door, you get an entire support system to rely on as you navigate college.

I want to clarify something you said tonight about head start…it is NOT for babysitting!! Being in a head start program can be a game changer for children in terms of long-term educational success. See the Brookings Institute study www.brookings.edu/articles/doe...

Trump proposes a $40 billion cut at HHS—one-third of its discretionary budget. Cuts would hit chronic disease program, rural health initiatives, and HIV work. It would eliminate funding for Head Start.

Worth noting: while Trump is attempting to destroy Head Start in next year's appropriations, they're not waiting to do it legally. They're also holding up funding right now, and centers are closing because of it.

South Carolina is one of those places where no pregnant woman is necessarily safe if she has a pregnancy complication. Add the Republicans' glee at destroying jobs, elimination of Head Start, tariffs to make housing even more unaffordable, elimination of health studies - procreation is a bad choice.

Among the programs featured in this column (which you should read): Head Start, which Trump and Musk have sabotaged and are now planning on eliminating.

Eliminating Head Start also risks leaving hundreds of thousands of US children under-prepared for k-12 school. Which means that it also risks forcing those children into an adulthood where they also have to settle for less-than-ideal partners, less-than-ideal childcare, and/or less-than-ideal jobs.

When Trump closed Head Start offices, I joined 33 Democrats to oppose it. Eliminating it was clearly the end goal – now it’s out in the open.

With no Head Start, 750K+ families lose childcare overnight. Trump's plans leave our families and children behind.

All 4 of my kids, & now my grandkids, have benefited from Head Start. They were very successful in school and have degrees & brilliant careers. My daughter actually teaches Head Start & helps children who might otherwise be lost academically. This is a travesty & will leave so many kids worse off.

I'm going to go through the "HHS passback" in this 🧵. This is what the White House sent back to HHS, based on HHS's guidance. It's Trump's budget plan, though can still be changed.

To start off, they call to eliminate Head Start, which helps fund free pre-k and learning programs for poor families.

Axing Head Start doesn’t just hurt children—it kills jobs. Tens of thousands of educators, social workers, and health professionals will be out of work. Whole communities—especially rural and working-class ones—will lose a lifeline. This is economic sabotage disguised as “parental rights.”
