Community: Can we have safe streets for our kids?

Police: Best we can do is steal their bicycles.
For the police "bike safety" just means stealing bikes from kids

Zoning in theory: we need land use regulation to keep homes away from sources of pollution.

Zoning in practice: the only places you can build new housing are right next to the highways and high-traffic streets that are your city’s largest sources of pollution.

Zoning in theory: we must physically separate incompatible land uses to protect people from harmful pollution.

Zoning in practice:
In the US we'll put a freeway next to an elementary school, but god forbid someone buy a beer with 500' of a playground.

floor area ratio (FAR) limits are designed to stop housing. in 1961 new york city capped FAR at 12 to prevent affordable housing which they dubbed “vertical slums”. the empire state building’s FAR is 25. why do we keep using FAR?

If you care about #fisheries, small scale fishers, food sovereignty and environmental justice, check this out. The inshore zone, long reserved for artisanal fisherfolk and local markets, now potentially open to commercial fleets with more indiscriminate and destructive gear. 🦑🌏🌊🎣

Grapefruit and Barbancourt rum makes a great cocktail during our citrus season. It's even better with a little crushed ginger and lime.

There is a great documentary on Netflix, "Join or Die," about the decline of clubs and fraternal groups and the like, and how it has atomized society.

The Park Circle neighborhood has been built out for years except for a few lots that flood. Now we are building on them. 2 homes on the left have been built in the last 5 years and flooded during the last hurricane. What is going on with incentives that cause this? Is it just increased demand?
