there isn't a single website that shaped my life like DeviantArt in 03-09; I was a very mediocre teenage photographer who honed my craft, made friends, fell in love (moved countries for it!), joined communities, experienced wonderful art. nothing like it since, this piece brilliantly elucidates why

The Death of DeviantArt and the art-site shaped hole haunting the Internet, by @torrent-empress.bsky.social

Both eulogy and appreciation, on what DeviantArt got right, and where they (and others) went wrong. A vivid picture of a web many of us miss!

acceptable ways to prove my address, apparently:

❌ my driving license, an official government document
❌ a letter from my bank signed by a human
✅ utility bills from a private company (they're in my girlfriend's name so I can't use them)

went onto linkedin for the first time in a few months because it's a cursed place, and the website is so utterly dogshit that the login page hard crashed my browser. I'm not even mad, that's impressive, how do you even do that in 2025

A bit of a vulnerable post by me but we need your help to get us through what has been a more difficult period than 2020.

It would be really appreciated if you could read and share in your networks too 💛

Unlike a lot of places in tech, my company, Set Studio/Piccalilli has no outside funding. Bootstrapped is what the LinkedIn people say, I think. It’s been a hard year this year. A very hard year...

this. people who’s only experience of the frankly shocking uk housing market can be summed up as ‘all of the good parts’ and ‘absolutely none of the bad parts’ suddenly wrenching the ‘housing insecurity is bad actually’ lever is turning me to malice
This house tax pretending is making me more insane than usual because as a renter I’ve had to move every 1-3 years just as standard because rents always rise. And no one cares. House owners get a tiny fraction of that precarity and suddenly it’s the worst thing that’s ever happened

This thread is fascinating
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

there isn't a single flight out there, no matter the time of day, no matter the carrier, no matter the length, that isn't improved by the tasteful addition of at least one (1) gin & tonic. no offense to the champagne-enjoyers but the gin & tonic is the ultimate and canonical in-flight beverage

I am being 100% serious when I say that we need to start ostracising people who cannot accept that what makes life meaningful is its ephemerality from polite society. this includes cryonics enthusiasts, the vampire who harvests his son's plasma & it especially includes ghouls who think this is okay

I am just about to get out of bed and start packing for a family weekend away, I leave for the airport in an hour, and I endorse this message
Flipping the script. People who wake up super early in the morning are actually the losers. They have to get up before everyone else because they are adrift and can't manage time. Those proud night owls among us who confidently roll out of bed right before our first obligation are truly in control.

I have read a lot about generative AI the last couple of years, a lot of it very good, but this is one of the best and most articulate elucidations of why there are so many things about it that fundamentally don't sit right with me. an absolute banger of a post, I implore you to read it posthaste
I wrote about AI art and why I philosophically refuse to use generative AI regardless of its potential utility, but it's actually about mortality and authoritarianism and book clubs and Bowling Alone. (I resisted an extended metaphor about curling, you're welcome / I'm sorry.)
