So an odd thing here is that if you say "an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume" your point is to communicate "it is not really Batman" but the problem is that the real Batman, within the fiction of the comic book "Batman", is also, literally, an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume
An unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume angrily confronted Santa Clara city officials during a joint meeting of the City Council, city authorities, and the Santa Clara Stadium Authority on Monday, using his public comment to condemn the city’s stance on cooperation with ICE.

New from me: It is not just that the US is experiencing democratic backsliding. Authoritarianism has emerged more quickly than in other benchmark countries.

This graph from John Burn-Murdoch sums it up. 🧵

SHUT IT THE FUCK DOWN THEN!!!!
The arrests of Don Lemon and Georgia Fort underscore the gravity of this moment. This has never happened before in our history. We shouldn't pretend it's normal.

More reason for us to hold the line and demand a DHS budget that stops funding lawlessness.

In Feb 2025, when pundits and others were saying that "no one was doing anything" and that the "resistance was dead," I clearly said that this was absolutely not true. I said AT THE TIME that the elites were complicit but the people WERE NOT. By mid Feb, Tesla Takedowns were starting... +

I get tired of saying it, but I’ll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people.

But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.
The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are a test for every MSM member with a platform. If you are not voicing your outrage at this blatant violation of the First Amendment, you are utterly discredited as a journalist.

Or how about this headline — “American citizen arrested without cause after exercising his Constitutional rights.” Very important that government propaganda not become the default framing.

People are asking a lot “how is this happening?” It’s happening the way abolitionists have warned you for decades it’s happening — you can’t dehumanize whole groups of people, pay for their brutalization & not expect for more bounty hunters to come.

the speed at which these guys have broken everything has given a lot of folks who should know better the impression that they are an unstoppable force and the only option is to negotiate the terms of surrender

just because the clown car goes very fast does not mean it isn’t full of clowns
Whatever the immediate fallout of the scandal, what is going to stick around is the impression it gives, of hapless idiots doing ridiculous things. And I think that seriously reduces the appeal of capitulating to these jokers.

I don't think @reuters.com posted it here, but I'm just kind of shocked that anyone working in media could have gone into the second Trump administration thinking, "I don't think in those first few days we understood what an organized agenda they had."

NEW — ICE violence has spread well beyond Minneapolis, with agents landing in small cities like St. Cloud. I spoke with Alice Valentine, a local queer trans woman, who protested ICE on Monday and was pepper sprayed, beaten and jailed as a result, along with her girlfriend.

This is Alice's story:

Yes, voting against ICE funding is the morally right thing to do. But you can be the most heartless political consultant bastard out there - cutting ICE is still the smart play. That Schumer/Jeffries are silent right now is political malpractice (and morally reprehensible, if you care about that).
New poll from Navigator also with an incredible result; the largest drop in support for ICE since June was actually among *Republicans*, 25% of which now say they have an unfavorable opinion of the agency.

also: it’s incredible there appear to be so many more people seriously contemplating and demanding we abolish ICE, and I think *that* significantly motivates the scolding about “messaging” and “timing” and fantasies of inoffensive focus-grouped messaging when a real crisis is at hand

in other words, the more we demand we abolish ICE, the more other people will tell us that’s unpopular, or unstrategic. that’s why they are saying that: because it is becoming popular, and it is strategic (if your goal is “end ICE violence,” not “protect some Democrats from taking a stand on ICE”)
