Grandfather, pedestrian … but that’s enough about me ….
Sometimes comments irritate me because of shaky assumptions and weak logic from clearly well meaning people. On reflection, I realise that any comment made in good faith is valuable, even if misguided or objectively wrong, because it shows us how other people are thinking - and we need to know.

Dogs of War by @aptshadow.bsky.social is a splendid book. It begins as a war story with bio-engineered animals and becomes much more.£2.29 though, it's been cheaper.

In Cambridge today it rained, and rained, and rained. So I ducked into the Picturehouse and chose The Choral from the three options on at that time of the afternoon. I’d been avoiding it: fearing sentimentality - but it was a really good piece of theatrical storytelling and musicality. Engaging.

In response to some of the comments:

If you agree with *all* the reporting of a news organisation that is both independent *and* non-partisan, then it's very unlikely to be independent and non-partisan.

This is true regardless of your politics.

Agreeing with all its reporting is the wrong test

EU rejoin is a *current* Lib Dem policy and one that we ran on in 2024. Simply announcing it isn't an option for the UK. We don't get to tell the EU that we're rejoining without years of prior steps. It will need a careful pathway, such as the one set out below, to make it a reality.

Finally caught up with One Battle After Another and those have to be 165 of the most enjoyable and exciting minutes I've ever spent in the cinema.

Thought it played at times like a mash-up of Running On Empty and Midnight Run, two of my favourite films of the 1980s.

Really enjoyed watching ‘One Battle After Another’ yesterday. A classic of the USA condition wrapped up with very well played personal stories: oh, and some imaginatively shot chases and encounters.

@jowolff.bsky.social Just enjoyed the Origin Story treatment of Marx. I am addicted to the Dunt/Lynskey works in general. Hearing that you contributed to this one I feel bound to say bravo to you too.

The evidence of Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine is plain to see.
Unpunished crimes encourage new atrocities.

Today, we are providing the first €10 million for the Special Tribunal to ensure that those responsible for the crimes of aggression do not escape justice.

It’s official: AIPAC is trying to buy my election to keep me out of Congress.

Apparently, I’m a “dangerous detractor”... by believing Palestinians (like myself and my family) deserve basic human rights.

But we’re not going to let AIPAC win.

They just tear-gassed us. They tried to run us over in a van holding a peaceful protester. They shot us with pepper balls. They dragged another protester into the facility.
moments ago, ice agents again came out of the broadview detention/“professing” facility to escort a silver suv out of the lot.

one of the agents picked up and threw congressional candidate kat abughazaleh to the ground.

Rayner is absolute class. She's been a bit silly in organising her taxes, but that's not why they hate her. They hate her because she did not know her place.

This. Humanities people say and believe equally stupid things about the sciences (no, ffs the laws of acoustics are physical laws, NOT METAPHORS, and no, quinine did not invent malaria.)

It is much better when we respect each other’s disciplinary rigour and methods and work together.
I see the reaction to that silly French Revolution paper has now, inevitably, reached the "STEM people think they're better than us and that's why we're better than them" stage.

People, please don't do this.

I’d rather have ‘rule of law’ than not. But remember, democratic rule of laws is a necessary condition for this: to prevent arbitrary and majoritarian rule.

Too many folk overthinking this. "Mass deportations are an abhorrence that a civilised country should not countenance".

That's all.

No need for logistical advice, the spirit of Churchill, or picking your favourite previous action down the slippery slope.
A day of shame for the UK. A political party proposes mass deportations and the response from other political parties is not to condemn this as going further than even Mosley or the National Front.
No10 spokesman not prepared to criticise anything about Farage speech today.

Not his description of "invasion", not his prediction that the UK on brink of civil war, not plans to pay the Taliban or Iran to take back migrants, or indeed to rule out doing so themselves.
