this is what “faculty consultation” on AI initiatives has typically looked like, and usually the faculty member is getting money from tech industry somehow, if you spend five minutes looking into it

Holy shit, this is huge.
Have you seen 3D animations from the IDF showing secret Hamas hideouts?

According to Israel's +972 magazine, many have "serious spatial inaccuracies or prefabricated assets—sourced not from classified intelligence but rather from commercial libraries, content creators, and cultural institutions."
How a Scottish maritime museum ended up in Israel’s 3D propaganda
An analysis of dozens of Israeli army animations discovered digital assets sourced not from classified intelligence but commercial libraries and content creators.

The biggest threat to generative AI is people’s basic desire to know and make things. I believe that that will be what undoes this creeping, cancerous mediocrity, if anything does, because nothing else (including, sadly, respect for life or others) is strong enough or ineradicable enough to persist.

At Texas Tech our Faculty Senate managed to get a proposal out to keep functioning, at least. This is a disaster for UT.
The UT System Board of Regents authorized campus presidents on Thursday to replace faculty senates with less independent versions of the bodies.

Regents also authorized major policy changes that will significantly limit free speech on campuses in response to pro-Palestinian protests last year.

The changes are in response to new state laws seeking to limit faculty’s influence and put guardrails on campus demonstrations.

The thing about surveillance is that it is *never* just about official structures and formal regulation. There are always informal underground forms of exploitation
Another insane surveillance story. DACA recipient pulled over in Colorado by police, then let go. Police tell a Signal group that includes dept that collabs with ICE. That dept then logs into an ALPR system from another department. Woman then arrested by ICE
