"It is unfair to have a society where parking is free for cars and housing is expensive for people" - Donald Shoup.

This is my first post on this platform.

Come along for the ride.
"and watch here, see, even if you add a lane it doesn't make traffic any better. In fact it makes it worse. It's called induced demand"

Cool take for road safety, but it also means less parking. Parking stalls used to be as small as 2.5m*5.5m, now they're usually 3.0m*6m, and even then it's a struggle for most trucks. Imagine removing 10-20% of parking spaces depending on the layout.
In April I attended the Good Roads Conference, where I met @davidzipper.bsky.social, a senior fellow at the MIT Mobility Initiative, who coined the term "car bloat" to describe the ever-expanding size of the average automobile. David's keynote speech illustrated the impacts of this phenomenon. 3/

The thought of calculating and enforcing parking minimums gives me hives. Thankful every day CBRM doesn't have parking minimums.

Don't worry, we still see many projects with 2+ spaces per residential unit.

This intersection got a Target, and they're calling it downtown.
It always cracks me up when places like this have a name like "Town Center."

The devil is in the details. It's in vogue to remove parking requirements, but that does nothing if you maintain large setbacks (which will inevitably be used for parking)

Ditto with upzoning while maintaining low lot coverage %'s.
A prime example of how other zoning restrictions are blocking multiplexes in Toronto, despite their nominal legalization. Lot coverage limits, minimum lot areas/frontages, and FSI are still excluding multiplexes in much of the city.

Oh yeah I would love to go but I already left my house once today and I have a rule where I can't leave my house twice in one day. It's just too many times to leave my house I'm sorry.

Look at how short those crossing distances are,and how the squiggle white lines "frame" the driver.

The extra walking distance is pretty tolerable in these scenarios
Sheffield’s first ‘Dutch-style’ roundabout has opened.

Compared to installing traffic signals, the design is safer for pedestrians and cyclists, causes less delay to people driving, and creates more green space.

“the monthly cost of social housing is $613. This is starkly lower than $2,100 for a shelter bed, $4,300 for a correctional facility bed, $13,500 for a hospital bed. Housing people is not only a moral imperative but also an economically sound decision.” Kathy Moreland RN #onpoli

Sadly, none of the Atlantic provinces have accepted CUPW’s offer to distribute government cheques during the strike at Canada Post.

Instead, governments in the Atlantic provinces are choosing to force members of the public to travel for their badly needed cheques.

Did NS Health learn nothing from the court case less than a month ago? www.cbc.ca/player/play/....

If NS doesn't offer the treatment, then it should cover the cost of treatment if it's available in another province.

That's the point of a NATIONAL healthcare system.

Laura O'Byrne has countless fibroids — growths around her uterus, which itself is three times larger than normal — and a large ovarian cyst. But she's met a number of roadblocks in treating her issues, including being dismissed by a Nova Scotia gynecologist and denied an out-of-province claim to MSI for an urgent hysterectomy in her home province of Manitoba.

What is going through someone's head when they think this is normal behavior? Absolutely no room for someone in a wheelchair/scooter or a stroller. Insane.

It's been raining for a week, and will rain for another week. The sun sets before I'm finished work at 4:30. It's stick season.

But I just got a great phone call, and the best career news I could've gotten

More to report as it develops.

What in the fresh hell motonormativity is this?

In Ontario, you must use a crosswalk if it exists. If there is no crosswalk, you can cross anywhere (so long as you're not interfering with traffic).

Is this just a jaywalking extortion device?
Pedestrians can have a little crossing sometimes, as a treat

Free public transit. Good idea? Not if you want more people out of cars.

People that use the bus will use it more. People already driving won't change.
