For years, but especially for the past year, Democrats have been in thrall to the idea that they need to chase an imagined median voter, and adopt that voter’s positions. Mamdani’s victory shows another way: hold principles, and persuade people to share them.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

This is a good 'smallest hill to die on.'
Just a minor rant, if you run a web site with a blog or whatever, make post date visible. I am fucking tired of reading shit and trying to decide if it is recent, up to date, or even relevant.

This goes for review sites, tech documentation, and regular old news/blogs.

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople

About Duterte, she basically said America is going the same direction as the Philippines under him who had a ruthless “war on drugs” using extrajudicial killings of over 6,000, just to name one atrocity. He’s now in The Hague for crimes against humanity. (I’m going down the Philippines rabbit hole.)
Jon Stewart on @thedailyshow.com is REALLY good tonight, especially the long conversation with @mariaressa.bsky.social, 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, who is blunt, brilliant and inspiring. Everyone should watch it. youtu.be/Tsb1I7hqaJ4?...

A new study finds that switching to Daylight Saving Time and back every year increases the risk of strokes and obesity, and suggests we should stay on Standard Time all year. But I think the distribution of strokes and obesity in each time zone tells another story.
Study confirms that switching to and from Daylight Saving Time is bad for our health
If you have to pick one, standard time is better than daylight saving time, but I will once again make a case for local time.

Teens shouldn’t need a tech company and a 2-ton machine just to move through their own city. The way we build our streets should give them the freedom to "ride solo" under their own power.

During the election campaign, Mark Carney pledged to increase the CBC’s budget by $150 million dollars a year.

Now that he’s in government, he’s telling the public broadcaster to find up to $198 million in annual cuts. He can’t claim to defend the country when he’s gutting its media and culture.
Suggest your own spending cuts, Carney government tells CBC, Via Rail and other Crown corporations
Nearly all government departments and federally-funded organizations are expected to propose "savings" of up to 15 per cent of their spending in the next three years.

This costs Canadians billions. The wealthiest people on Earth won’t pay what they owe.

What do we get in return? Nothing. This is another tactic to destroy our economy & instead of fighting back, we’re rolling over.

Canadian municipalities continue to play funny games with their population projections to keep current tax increases low while also inflating long-term land supply requests.

IMO, maybe we should just mandate the use of the provincial expert projection!

I have been thinking about the idea of wrapping your movement in American history and the flag and I think there’s some merit to it I think for more revolutionary groups. It could be an interesting experiment to shield yourself in American history and the flag in larger protests. This has power.
