Lyndon Johnson reported to active duty in the Navy two days after Pearl Harbor. While he embellished his own war record, he did serve during the dangerous early months of war in the Pacific, and had to be ordered back to his congressional seat in June 1942 by FDR. -OS

It reminded me of placating a toddler throwing a fit by distracting him with candy. It’s fucking insane that this man is the president of the United States.

i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

Donald Trump is historically unpopular and Republicans are reeling — but we can’t take anything for granted. We need to keep organizing to secure our strongest check on Trump’s power in the midterms.

The fact that a second strike like that in an armed conflict is definitely a war crime should not completely negate the fact that *there is no war* and ALL the strikes are cold-blooded murder. The whole chain of command are murderers.

Rand Paul tells me that he wants the full video of the Venezuelan boat strike released.

“And I think if the public sees images of people clinging to boat debris and being blown up, I think that there is a chance that finally, the public will get interested enough in this to stop this.”

Admiral Bradley is set to brief Congress tomorrow on the boat strikes—

Which brings Admiral Holsey’s recent resignation to mind, after he informed Hegseth that he had no intention of carrying out an illegal order after 40 years of service in the U.S. Navy—

I’d like to hear Holsey’s testimony too

Rand Paul just posted this letter from the Coast Guard confirming that 1/4 of the boats they stop carry no contraband. The likelihood that Hegseth & Bradley ordered the murder of innocent civilians is very high.

Mike Johnson, of course, misses the point. The President should notify Congress of military action. He's the head of Congress. Him NOT being notified about a "double tap", kill everyone military action on foreign territory is the problem. Trump is not a king. Hegseth is not the Secretary of War.

The same could be said about virtually every Trump appointee, as well as about Trump himself. Being even remotely qualified for their positions wasn’t a requirement.

Looking good on TV or buying their way in, and swearing fealty to Trump were the major—or only—qualifiers.

Department of Defense Law of War Manual, Sec. 18.3.2.1 states the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders.

What’s its key example? Wait for it . . . It’s "orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

And remember it’s not about military service. We have civilian control of military. This is our tradition. We didn’t always give Secretary of Defense to people because they were decorated or ‘warriors.’ This is a mistaken view many people have. USA has always had CIVILIAN CONTROLLED MILITARY.
