People can and should have nice things.

If someone writes a report saying "we build transport that is too nice and that's why projects are expensive and that's why we don't build more of them" then not only should their analysis be discarded as junk but they should be pilloried.

New study from Melbourne finds reducing residential speed limits from 50km/h to 30 km/h on local roads would protect cyclists from danger, make riding less stressful and get more people cycling while not causing traffic delays for cars.
Switching 50km/h speed limits to 30km/h would protect cyclists while barely affecting commutes, research finds
One expert says a cyclist hit by a car travelling 50km/h has about a one-in-ten chance of surviving, while at 30km/h it was a nine-in-ten chance

The social benefits of Edinburgh’s excellent public transport system far exceed its financial returns. But of course, if you don’t believe in public transport and offer no solutions to the city’s congestion problems, it’s easy to criticise.

Misinformation isn't random - it's strategic. 🧵

In the first cross-national comparative study, we examine 32M tweets from politicians.

We find that misinformation is not a general condition: it is driven by populist radical right parties.

Tokyo Station is something special. A hub to the rest of Japan, a shopping paradise, a 5-star hotel, a museum, one of Tokyo’s brightest night drinking spots.

Sydney Central Station has a place to buy a meat pie, some “convenience” stores and a toilet, if sepsis is your thing.

I refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and here’s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!

one option, pursued by VCs lo these many years, is to try and make every industry low capital cost and incredibly high margin like software. the AI industry dares to ask: what if we do the opposite, and make software incredibly capital intensive with terrible scaling properties
