It seems that many recent political debates in the city (Bring Chicago Home, ADUs, garbage fee) come down to sparing the bungalow belt in the search for new revenue / economic growth.

What happens when you downzone?

Our new open-access research paper in @findingspress.org investigates effects of decades of downzoning in Chicago.

I didn't take pics but the feeling of being in a group of people with no visible beginning or end was so thrilling. The opposite of online anomie, and a living counterpoint to the wary, isolated, compartmentalized world the shitheads want to make. It's simple and obvious I guess but it means a lot.
Sorry to be corny but the aerial shots of these crowds are almost indescribably moving and hopeful

we can & should build better than this block long Burlington parking lot on Broadway next to the CTA red line. We want more of what makes city living great: more small biz entrepreneurs, more CTA riders, and more housing opportunities for all people no matter your race or class.

Carlos Ramierez-Rosa will have a generation of cyclist blood on his hands for favoring car parking over protected bike lanes here.

He salted the fields by extending concrete all the way out to the car lane in a way that prevents future protected bike lanes from being easily retrofitted

The reason why the FP sold for so much — relative to its small output — is because it has a world view that is embraced by a readership of very wealthy people. Weiss isn't anti-establishment. She comforts the comfortable.

@matloff.bsky.social really appreciate the LA book. In the Markov queue question at the end of chapter 2, is the probability of going from state 3 to state 3 (0.4)(0.2) (as written) or is it (0.4)(0.2) + (0.6)(0.8) (if service does not complete)?

"We shouldn't build nice facilities because it'll make the place more valuable" is a fucking dogshit argument against doing world class city things. If you want to stave off gentrification — to the extent that it's possible, while understanding that places change — YOU MUST MAKE IT EASY TO BUILD.
