Reading through Reddit forums like r/professors is often deeply depressing.

Some of the educators on there seem to just really hate their students and teaching and have a reductive us vs them mindset.

If you hate and distrust the students that much just quit?

We love links because we love the open web
It is so incredibly nice to have a social platform that values links again - a breath of fresh air in the poisoned ecosystem of the creator economy

Twitter is cratering. Despite the inevitability I still feel sad.

He didn’t buy that place to save it, to grow it…he bought it to shift the Overton window to the right.

But it was also home for millions of people.

Realising I have followed far too many American lawyers on this site today.

Looking for anyone not falling into this category to follow now (unless you’re like a cool American lawyer)

Coming back to Bluesky after some time away and seeing gifs are now allowed.

If I see any of you using any of these ones I’m blocking you instantly. Please leave them on twitter.
An underrated benefit of bluesky only allowing image posts is that I never need to see these goddamn gifs again

I have a spare ticket for Lion King on Sunday (tomorrow) at 14:30 at the Lyceum theatre. It is a Disney Magical Mondays ticket so only £29.50 (a big saving on the normal price). The seat is in row ZA at the back of stalls. Anyone interested?

I am begging and pleading with the media (I see you @bloomberg.com) to stop taking Elon's false framing that he's a "free speech absolutist" at face value. It is actively misleading people and is journalistic malpractice. www.techdirt.com/2024/08/16/c...
Can We Finally Stop Pretending Elon Musk Is A “Free Speech Absolutist”? He’s Not
A challenge for the mainstream media: can you stop saying that Elon Musk is a free speech absolutist? Over the past few years, we’ve had a number of posts highlighting just how laughable it is that…

Things we're leaving in 2023:
-apologizing for credit card fraud
-being a people-pleaser with the FBI
-feeling shame about the things that bring us joy (walking around cemeteries looking for names to put on loan applications)

Giving a big talk tomorrow in Brisbane about the decline of free expression globally, and its particular impact on LGBTQ+ communities and sex workers, and how it's all intertwined, just as human rights are interconnected. I'm excited and also a bit anxious—this is my first keynote since 2019!

Elon Musk understands the value of the block feature. I know this because he blocked me over this post:
Ken Klippenstein on TikTok
Elon Musk just announced X will be ending the ability to block other users, which reminded me of the time Musk blocked me. #Musk #Elon #ElonMusk

RFK Jr: Pee is stored in the balls, OK?

Rogan: Wow. In the balls? How does nobody knows this?

RFK Jr: There are literally tens of thousands of studies that show pee is stored there, in the balls

Rogan: Wow. Wow. So like, does that mean girls don’t pee?

RFK Jr: Now you’ve gone beyond my expertise

Should note I was/am a reporter (still freelance), and I’m trying to sell a book right now.

So I 110% get the business importance of these huge platforms - but I’m not sure I believe it’s *worth* it anymore.

Or ethical.
IMO: nothing wrong with finding a more niche place to hang out on the Internet that you enjoy.

I also believe this idea that we *should* want to be on the biggest possible global platform with as few blocks or barriers as possible helped get us into this mess.

It's somehow so much worse than that. @zitron.bsky.social said it's like a "truncated Facebook comment section where everyone wants you to follow them" and it could not be more accurate.

Only feed you get is filled with random bullshit.

Threads has a single algorithmic feed full of posts from everyone on the app and…that’s it. Unlike Twitter, Mastodon or Bluesky, it doesn’t seem possible to only view posts from people you follow. There’s just one feed full of people and brands I don’t follow. It kind of sucks.
