Rem Koolhaas wrote the only public activity still allowed is shopping. Things have changed - it's now branding. People have no personalities or "character" they have personal brands. Do something reprehensible? No problem. Fold it into your brand. You're twisted? Cool, romanticize your twistedness.

My number one source of bitterness this year has been about the waste. All the disruption, political games, chaos, just a total waste of time and taxpayer money leading to the destruction of US leadership in science and the future of our economy.
Weird thing happening where I + my colleagues, same convo on repeat: can't think about next year, next month, even next week. All I can do is wait for the next days or next hrs, close projects, write more grants that wont save us, sit in misery. This is what the fed govt is doing to science

"Hey map, this is my immediate area. What's the name of that tamale place I like?"

"Here, I zoomed way out so you can see all of the 118 mexican restaurants in the tri-state area."

Oh sure just dunk on half of Bsky with our smartphone pics and lack of patience and altitude and dark skies and meteors.
This is the nicest shot of the night, via two different cameras that captured the same meteor.

So far I find the Avatar movies an enjoyable experience that I never think about afterward. Remarkably transient. It's the mo-cap cgi; it's neither real people nor fully animated, so my brain just tosses the memory.
This is such a funny statement.

Avatar keeps selling endless amount of tickets and people on the internet keep saying no one watches the movies. Or everyone hate the movies but are hypnotised by the posters.

This is about 10 posts into a book-reading thread. The book is "Disabling Intelligences".
Before they get into their "taxonomy of AI" in ch2, the author mentions an interesting resource from www.aiaaic.org where harms are grouped into categories: autonomy, physical, psychological, reputational, human rights and civil liberties, social and cultural, political and economic, environmental.

I made it 1.5 days avoiding politics before something else hit my impending doom button.
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

Old joke:
B.S. = "I know everything"
M.S. = "I don't know anything"
Ph.D. = "Nobody knows anything"
As someone who spent ten years in grad school (and did defend + graduate) I’m always so weirded out by people who think being smart about one thing makes them smart about everything when what being highly educated did to me was saddle me with the crushing certainty that I’m not smart about anything
the pandemic really fucked him up. he had no expertise in public health, but felt like being a quant guy should make him an expert by default, and people not agreeing with him on that point just sent him into a bizarre radicalizing ego spiral.

I'll just keep unfollowing until I don't see any more full quotes from that asshole. It's like someone picking up roadkill and shoving it under your face and going "LOOK! SEE IT? IT'S A DEAD SQUIRREL, IT GOT SQUASHED BY A TRUCK, YOU CAN TELL BY THE TREADMARKS".

K. I'm not better off knowing.

Pivoting away from the noise I can't do anything about. Time to share what useful things I can, or failing that just shitpost.

I need a cookbook or recipe site that has in a bright colored box at the top the REAL prep times and what needs to be done before. I skim recipes and miss the part where it says "andthenrefrigerateforfourhours" and get to that step IRL at 6pm. 🫤
The person who estimates "total cooking time" on recipes is the ultimate internet troll

why do some people

on social media

write like this

is it because they never learned paragraphs

or punctuation

or do they think it's more impactful

probably it's just style imitation

dullards copying dullards

what do you think

High quality ragepost. I picture the phone being flung across the room during that last word.
IF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC FOUND OUT THAT THE SYSTEM WAS BEING RIGGED AGAINST THEM WE WOULD REVOLT UNTIL THE GOP WAS
CHARGED WITH CONSPIRACY.

I'D TELL YOU TO ASK DICK CHENEY-- BUT THE SUDDEN REALIZATION THAT HE GOT THE BALL ROLLING ON WHERE WE ARE TODAY OPENED A PORTAL TO THE NEXT DIMENTION.

This quoted part is exactly the type of clever-brain thinking that is widespread amongst techbros.
New Yorker author describing gradient descent and oblivious to the existence of local minima:

"(The algorithm could be compared to a hiker navigating from a mountaintop to a valley; a simple strategy for eventually finding one’s way is to insure that every step moves downhill.)"

Way back when, I went to a showing of Fahrenheit 9/11 at a random theatre in nowhere and it was packed. There were cheers at the end. People were starved of news about Iraq that wasn't simping for W and Rumsfeld.

It's the default state of our media not to challenge authority.
If Edward R. Murrow returned from the grave I believe he would be the most popular media figure by a gazillion miles. There really is an appetite for strong, cool, and fact-based courageous TV journalism.

Meta was one of mine. My name refers to all the letters that have been ruined by dickbag appropriation: X, Z, Q, Y. Leave J alone you pricks.
What pisses me off is the fact that I had to strike that word from my working vocabulary, and it WAS one of my favorite words.

Something obvious in academia is that "excellence" is highly variable. Schools can be much better for certain topics, like UMinn for ChemEng or Rochester for Optics. Even within top schools the faculty and students can vary dramatically.
Ivy League schools have long promoted meritocracy myths--myths that, for privileged students, are easy to swallow. Particularly when coupled with messages about the heritability of intelligence, they explain why privileged students and their families have opportunities that others do not.

Why wouldn't this already be illegal?
ICE has been targeting young kids for months, separating families and instilling fear.

Tell Congress to pass legislation ensuring no child is arrested without a warrant and coerced to give up their rights by immigration agents.
ICE: Stop Terrorizing Children
ICE is traumatizing children as young as 14 – trying to strip them of their rights while they're without attorneys or family to help them. Take action against these horrific abuses now.
