UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

On Friday 18 blue state attorneys general BLASTED the Federal Trade Commission, telling it to back off trans youth healthcare and warning of an insidious attempt to reshape the regulation of medicine in the US.

And nobody covered it.

This is what privacy advocates have been warning about for a long time. Locally, despite attempts at a ban Ann Arbor has a facial recognition policy that’s basically “yup, we use facial recognition.” Ditto drones. Countywide, there has been public pushback against ALPRs it’s not settled. #a2council
I spent the week at the police surveillance convention and let me tell you my biggest observation: The name of the game now is consolidating as much information as humanely possible from surveillance devices, the internet, other governmental data, and literally a million other places. 🧵

genuinely crazy to me how unitary executive advocates read the vesting clause as granting a huge scope of essentially royal "inherent" powers. one would think that if the framers intended to give the president royal authority, they would have just said so.

Someone should post this to the Ann Arbor Reddit. I’ve seen so many posts claiming that Dunbar Towers will be bad actually bc people who are homeless are all criminals and drug users who are unhoused because they are bad people. #a2council
The belief that poverty and homelessness are about "individual choices" didn't arise on its own. It was manufactured through decades of messaging designed to protect the policies and interests that create mass precarity.

As this new poll shows, that propaganda campaign has been wildly successful.
Most US adults think individual choices keep people in poverty, new AP-NORC/Harris poll finds
A new AP-NORC poll finds that most U.S. adults think personal choices are a major driver of poverty and homelessness, while fewer blame a lack of government support.

As universities are pushing students to use generative AI for all kinds of things, even going so far as to call it an “ethical responsibility,” I hope this will be a resource for people who supervise student workers and need to gently push back.
STPP asks our research assistants & experiential learning students not to use generative AI in their work with us. We created a one-pager explaining why the pitfalls of GenAI tools make them ill-suited for the partnerships and policy analysis that we do. stpp.fordschool.umich.edu/research/com...

Voting YES on A and B to solve two important Ann Arbor issues — paying for a new library without raising taxes *and* finally getting a well-managed outdoor plaza — and to help address another — more affordable housing.

I think Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissents are an important exception to the "Supreme Court dissents don't matter" rule of thumb, because she is using them not to argue with the conservative justices, but to explain to the public that the conservative justices are liars and in the tank for Trump
Ketanji Brown Jackson Is Telling the Truth About the Supreme Court
The task of interpreting the law is inherently “political.” But no justice has been this comfortable saying so in public.

Look, it’s not complicated. If we need more housing now we should have built it 100 years ago.
So many of Ann Arborites’ favorite spots would be illegal today — Jefferson Market, Washtenaw Dairy, and this lovely apartment building. Legalize housing and logical density! @moreneighborsa2.org

If Library Director Neiburger wasn't so nice & more willing to exercise raw political power, he'd move this to July & leverage used VHS tapes to flip some of the 70+ crowd, many of whom are now fighting tooth & nail against the most amazing possible new downtown library that won't need new taxes.
