The cops shot and killed an activist during STOP COP CITY and then the state criminalized the protesters for indicting over 60 people on RICO charges... THAT IS STILL HAPPENING NOW. Those charges have not been dismissed. The first trials are underway.

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

Wrecking young people's reading, writing & analytical skills during their formative years is an economic imperative for AI companies. For many of us who learned these things without AI, slop can't pass for news or entertainment. Destroying standards is essential to the industry's growth & survival.

Even those with insurance will have to travel further to get both primary care and urgent care. People will delay care, others won’t get it at all.

There will be health care deserts.

People will die.

🧵 regarding the shutdown:

The Democrats aren’t being clear enough about this but we can be: this shutdown is about saving lives.

If we don’t reverse the Medicaid cuts (and the ACA subsidies on insurance bought through the exchanges) that Republicans made this year, people will die.

Watching the way the Trump administration is using criminalization as a weapon ought to make clear how criminalization works even in normal times.

Glad to be working with UMedics on a protester health and safety training tomorrow. We need more of these around the city. We’ve got great street medics in Chicago, but we’ve learned lately that we need more people to know the basics of how to care for each other in protest scenarios.

We are here because policing in the U.S. has been this way for generations. This is why ICE acts with impunity. They know they can act this way.

Stop lying. Your state cops attacked protesters alongside ICE yesterday. I was there. I and others were violently attacked by ICE agents. Your state cops acted in concert with them during the attack.
State, county, and local law enforcement have been working together and coordinating to ensure public safety around the Broadview ICE facility, and to protect people’s ability to peacefully exercise their constitutional rights.

This would be a fascinating paper.

I would surmise that ~80% of these new lexical tropes are just ways for people to avoid using words like “Nazi” and “fascist” and “coup” because we’re all still worried it makes us sound crazy/histrionic + irrational fear that naming something makes it true.
Someone could and maybe should write a paper on the developing lexicon for talking about This Moment, especially in higherEd and non-profit type spaces.

Maybe that already exists? But it’s wild to me how I go to meetings full of people who say things like, “all of this” and “these times” etc.

the other half of this that I've never really gotten over: this all but explicitly amounts to valorizing being "asleep". people are really out here wielding "I have no idea what's going on, historically speaking" as a credential
This is, after all, the original and authentic meaning of "stay woke." In fact, the perversion of "woke" into an epithet is perhaps the defining metaphor of our moment: Historical victims are not only being revictimized, but also mocked for never forgetting this is always a possibility in the US.

- socks
- bug spray in summer
- hand warmers in winter
- batteries (AA & AAA always, D or C for fans & radios)

Additionally no other country on earth has the policing capability of the U.S. And those of us who have spent our adult lives warning about what this would mean, can only say that people should have moved decades ago to shrink law enforcement and in some of our estimation to abolish it.
