The UK will celebrate net emigration and depopulation come 2027.

And by 2028 it will start to realise, with an ageing society and low growth, what a really silly thing it has done.

The right will go "pro-natalist", the centre-left will be completely stuck.

New post just out:

"The Overshoot"

Net migration is collapsing, and will fall further over the coming years. We could even have net emigration.

What does that mean for the country and the political narrative as we head towards the next election?

This is an excellent, level-headed, informative piece. I'd kill for a government which could discuss the issue with the same sense of objectivity and calm.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

It's all so supine and pathologically risk averse. A government trying to survive day to day, too scared to take the kindness of big decisive action which would repair the country and win an election. An unbelievable wasted opportunity.

But it is appalling for the female leader of the opposition to be so personally vindictive against the first female Chancellor.

It is simply childish. Using personal insults to cover up for the lack of policy response from the hollowed out con party

The UK’s problems stem from having too few successful, productive, international industries. This permeates all areas of national life. It means many places have too few well paid jobs and too little income coming in. This constrains spending in the local economy, hurting smaller businesses.

My main issue with the debate around ECHR is that no one advocating for it seems willing to accept that the past decade of politics has shown us that withdrawing from organisations/treaties/institutions always has more unintended consequences than intended, usually negative.

Spain has constructed an entire national network of high-speed rail since the 1990s, covering almost 2,500 miles of track.

If HS2 opens in 2033, it will have taken almost as long to build one-eighteenth of that distance.

Spain is still building more, planning to have 4,300 miles.
Sorry, but this is not true. Designing and building a system to allow travel at 500kph is pushing the boundaries. Having to do that while ensuring a lifespan of 150 years, and accounting for climate change, adds an additional layer of difficulty.
