The thing that gets me more than the commercial success is the critical success - Balatro is one of the best reviewed, most highly awarded indie games ever made, from IGF to The Game Awards.
small games by tiny devs finding huge success by dropping all notions of expression and focusing on dopamine delivery has done some sort of heavy damage to whatever I believed in in the 2010s about game design

I see a deep hypocrisy in democratic leaders both playing safe for 2028 and saying they think Trump is a dictator in waiting. If he’s a government shutdown away from dictatorship, then 2028 doesn’t matter and we should be preparing for a civil war.
