The Senate has just voted 52-48 to overturn a CFPB rule capping most overdraft fees at $5, allowing big banks to continue to gouge consumers for billions each year.

This is a betrayal to consumers everywhere, particularly servicemembers, seniors, rural Americans, and other vulnerable groups.

This statement is important but could have been stronger. Courts and state bars should sanction those who violate the ethics rules that reinforce the rule of law, such as the anti-discrimination rules and prohibitions on influencing others (including gov agencies and officials) to violate the law.

If the administration is actually serious about clamping down on waste, fraud, and abuse it should be letting the CFPB do its job.

The CFPB returns much more money to victims of fraud and illegal practices than it costs to run and is the only agency dedicated to safeguarding consumers.
Employees of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau were instructed to cease “all supervision and examination activity” and “all stakeholder engagement,” effectively stopping the agency’s operations, in an email from the director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, on Saturday.

It is notable that Big Law is completely absent from the legal fights to protect democracy. In 2017, they bragged about their pro bono work for the resistance. Now, they are silent -presumably cowering in fear of Trump and Musk.
