if you are overwhelmed, I highly recommend:
-making a list of things you don't care about being out of the loop
-cutting down on alcohol
-cleaning, organizing and decluttering your home instead of doomscrolling
-making plans with friends
-weekly therapy
-charging your phone away from your bed

Many of us know one (or two):

“The researchers found that overall, people were motivated to believe in conspiracy theories by a need to understand and feel safe in their environment and a need to feel like the community they identify with is superior to others.”

The owner of Twitter sends out 100 right wing propaganda tweets every single day and the algorithm is set up so that every single person on Twitter has to see every single one of these tweets. Now here’s another piece about Blue Sky’s ideological diversity problem.

This is front and center in my mind when I’m reading with my kids. We take breaks to discuss context and narrative techniques.
I’ve talked about this ad nauseam but yeah it’s a consequence of 1) the psychologicalization of our language (everything is about Self) 2) the affect of algo driven social media and now even legacy media 3) no one made these people read Amelia Bedelia 4) the way we teach reading flattens meaning
One thing social media has taught me (though I have definitely experienced it in other media too): a lot of people, even quite smart people, are worryingly bad at reading comprehension. For instance: many have trouble distinguishing between someone *describing* a thing and *advocating* that thing.

What I’ve found to work in a specific strata of aspirational
Middle class communities: ascribe your choices to have a regular ass summer to some nook and author. Make it sound like a school of thought. Any one will do. No one actually reads the books!

If I see another article about birth rates that refuses to grapple with the way having children systematically disadvantages women I swear to god. There is no mystery. Stop pretending there is. We’ve got to do away with credulity for nonsense.

If a decade ago you would have told ESPN they’d one day draw 8.5 million viewers for a women’s NC game, they would passed out cigars. This game is exploding, and these numbers are sustainable. In the near future, think the baseline will easily be 10 million viewers.
