This is such loser behavior man. It's never not remarkable to me how many people on Bluesky treat the platform like its primary purpose is as some public accountability referendum on morality, without realizing obsessive gatekeeping bullshit like this *IS* what's keeping people at bay.

These are the actions of a regime that baldly does not care about optics vis-a-vis the broad public and knows that it will face no meaningful check from any other branch of government. Abducting firefighters mid-wildfire looks terrible. It would poll poorly. Not a single voter is asking for this.

It's important to note here that we're not just talking about faculty & university staff. 100s of U.S. colleges are in towns or small cities where they form the major industry & lifeblood of the community. Loss of students -> loss of rent $, restaurant $, bars, bookstores, gaming stores...
The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

We’re now a nation of cowards. Trumps America
University of Pennsylvania goes all in on anti-trans BS under pressure from the White House. This will go way beyond just sports.
BREAKING

The University of Pennsylvania has come to an agreement with the Trump administration on what the Department of Education said was its Title IX violations.

This will include stripping trans athlete Lia Thomas of her records, titles, and recognitions.

"The continued vitality of literally scores of decisions must be understood to depend on nothing more than the proclivities of the individuals who now comprise a majority of this Court."--Thurgood Marshall
Way back in 2022 I wrote about Thurgood Marshall in the early 90s telling anyone who would listen that the Supreme Court’s conservatives were toying with bad faith legal theories that threatened the entire civil rights project.

No one listened. badfaithtimes.com/tho/

We needed to address this problem when the nine-member unelected super-legislature decided the 2000 presidential election instead of the voters. Once we allowed that to happen, the entire ballgame was over.
The formative political event for my generation was not actually (only) 9/11. It was Florida 2000. We learned that we, as a country, were perfectly fine with not counting everyone's votes, that the institutions (esp. SCOTUS) were not going to save us, & that one party didn't believe in democracy.
Normal, mainstream, pro-democracy political parties do not make restricting suffrage the central pillar of their policy platform.

My entire adult life has been one long episode of the Republican Party trying to keep people's votes from being counted. It's obscene. We shouldn't tolerate it anymore.

Compton, CA: A masked, heavily-armed man wearing body armor jumped out of a SUV today to kidnap a local resident.

He forgot to put the vehicle in park, causing it to roll down the street damaging other cars. He jumped in the vehicle (which had no platess) and drove off without identifying himself.
