100% this.

If you can't find joy in the act of writing, and feel euphoria after editing several drafts into exactly what your thoughts had in mind (or close to it), then I really suggest you don't become a writer.

The idea, the thoughts, are nothing without execution. The work is the thing.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

We already do, they’re called books 📚
You know how the existence of cars and power tools makes it necessary to have “exercise” and “manual crafts” as a deliberately chosen part of a balanced life?

We’re probably going to need something like that cognitively, for adults.

Want to read what I really think about the Trump administration and the Asia Pacific? Here you go. It’s a goddamn catastrophe for U.S. national interests and for the regional economic and diplomatic order.
A United States that is disintegrating and no longer a leader in Asia
As Trump 2.0 hollows out US state capacity, the Asia Pacific must prepare for a world without US leadership

"military officials may be getting directed to execute potentially illegal actions. Given this, how can we not hear from a top official who may have already concluded they’re being asked to carry out the unacceptable?"
Awful: Pentagon officials told lawmakers Trump now claims authority to bomb people merely “affiliated” with “narco-terrorist" groups, Rep Adam Smith tells me. But under questioning, they wouldn't say what “affiliated” even means!

Lots of fresh info in my new piece:

Did you know that the North American Society for Oceanic History has book awards for maritime & naval history & archaeology? If your book on a topic in those categories has a 2025 original copyright, you’re probably eligible for consideration for this year. Give me a shout if you want to know more!

🚨 @smh-historians.bsky.social: Anyone interested in chairing and/or commenting on a SMH panel about place and memory in the Navy? 🚨

Papers are (1) atolls and lagoons, (2) sailors relationship with their ships, and (3) tattoos.

@honer.bsky.social book Learning Navy (?) Is great.
Tactics should not be divorced from intellect. The mil adaptation literature shows the role that org culture plays in identifying + solving tactical problems in combat. Only way force can adapt at scale is when senior leaders incentivize, encourage it; and use their positions to drive change.
The Army is a tactical force and does not think strategically. In fact, it seems to eschew strategic thinking culturally. Became acquainted with a major once when I gave a paper at USAWC once who was a strategist, and it was quite clear his career was not going anywhere. PhD historian.

Since military tattoo discourse has become a thing, it's always good to go to the source.

BLUF: Marines don't get Nazi tattoos. If they do, they become - dare I say it - ex-Marines: www.marines.mil/portals/1/Do...

“the constitution forbids race conscious remedies” would be news to the people who wrote the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments
Griem goes there, arguing in response to Justice Jackson that there can be no race-conscious remedy absent a finding of intentional discrimination.

One of the things that doesn't come out in the soundbites but does in the full speech is Hegseth's repeated, explicit emphasis on viewing problems from the perspective of an E-6 or O-3, wholly unaware (as a bad O-4) that the job of the 0-7s to O-10s in front of him is quite different.
One of the challenges in trying to write something about Hegseth's speech at The Quantico Disgrace is you have to listen to the whole speech but it is very difficult to listen so much and not have the style of speech bleed into your writing and you *really* don't want to write like Hegseth talks.

as a girl with a PhD in natural language processing and machine learning it's actually offensive to me when you say "we don't know how LLMs work so they might be conscious"

I didn't spend 10 years in mines of academia to be told ignorance is morally equal knowledge.

We know exactly how LLMs work.
