I think the loss of Saipan (which triggered the collapse of the Japanese government) and the capture of the Philippines (Leyte to Luzon), which cut the Home Islands off from points south, would be more deserving of the description.

Thank you. Yes, the book (Learning War) discusses these issues and explores how the U.S. Navy incentivized learning in the first half of the 20th century. I think it offers a useful perspective.
