freedom of speech ≠ speech without consequences
the thing about the “town square” analogy as it pertains to social media is that it actually does work. it’s just that “town square” meaning “saying anything to anyone without repercussions” is ridiculous. try going up to a stranger in public and saying something weird and see what happens.

Your location data isn’t just a pin on a map. It can reveal where you work, worship, protest, or seek healthcare—and it’s being harvested, sold, and weaponized. Lawmakers must act now to protect our privacy.
Privacy on the Map: How States Are Fighting Location Surveillance
Your location data isn't just a pin on a map—it's a powerful tool that reveals far more than most people realize. It can expose where you work, where you pray, who you spend time with, and, sometimes ...

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

History is repeating itself.

There were more LGBTQ people removed from government during the lavender scare than were suspected communists during the red scare. They only really taught the latter in history classes.

I always thought Wallace Shawn had the ideal career: you get to be this well-regarded highbrow playwright and art house movie maker

AND you also get to be a part of millions of people‘s childhoods by being in Clueless, the Princess Bride, and Toy Story. What a life.

Why don’t we have edits? How might we implement edits?

@verdverm.com dives in and shows one way we can get to edits.

He’ll also be at #ATmosphereConf if you want to jam on the nuances of editing in person.
I wrote a thing

Adding Record Editing with History to ATProtocol

You can use a simple little pattern to edit records while preserving history and still supporting full deletion. This works for both Bluesky posts and custom lexicon...

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.
i mean, the president's executive order isn't a goddamn law! as far as this doctor is concerned, who cares what the president says!
A New York City doctor said he will continue providing gender-affirming treatments to his patients younger than 19 despite President Donald Trump’s executive order aiming to ban such care.

In my use so far, there is not one single good and useful thing about Apple Intelligence
This is my periodic rant that Apple Intelligence is so bad that today it got every fact wrong its AI a summary of @washingtonpost.com news alerts.

It's wildly irresponsible that Apple doesn't turn off summaries for news apps until it gets a bit better at this AI thing.
