I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.

A lot of my friends are scientists and whenever they tell me about a new dangerous thing, I can usually immediately tell them a way you could plot a murder with that as the weapon, and a scenario that would make sense for it, and those are all just ideas floating around if I need them.
I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

Looking for some input for a Thanksgiving recipe. I really want to make a fruit tart with custard (see below). I EITHER want to make a cranberry curd for it that goes between the base and the custard, and then put another fruit on top, or make lime curd put whole cranberries on top.

I’d describe my mood right now as “everything is going really well, I’m really happy and excited for the future, and ALSO I have not stopped listening to the Mountain Goats for the last two weeks.”

Amazing that up until a few years ago we didn’t have the phrase “be normal about.” I use that a lot! What did I even say to my friends about gossip before then?

it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance
The Danish Social Democrats are currently on course for their worst election result since at least the Second World War, despite their brand of far-right accommodationism being touted as a blueprint for other centre-left parties.

to have an affair with one longshot presidential candidate twice your age that you’re profiling may be regarded as a misfortune; to have two looks like carelessness

For once in my whole life I have been temporarily distracted from politics by some positive developments in my personal life.

This is different but: Virginia Woolf edited some of EM Forster’s writing, and sometimes in his books there’s a sentence that’s very obviously her voice, and I just LOVE it. I love that you can see the place where she said “what if was phrased this way instead?”
Yes; and I want to make a different point.

Editors *shouldn’t* be invisible. They should have bylines. YOU DESERVE to know who shapes the stories you read. Editors do that no less than writers/reporters do. Very often, they’re the ones who assigned the piece, not the writer, and who headlines it.
Editors have a really hard job, and the good ones can make something unreadable readable, and the great ones can make something unreadable into something good. But they're basically invisible, until someone tries to write without one.

Honestly it probably would have gotten me to a Target/Starbucks if I were spending money at either of them.
Beginning Monday, a Frozen Peppermint Hot Chocolate drink will be available exclusively at Starbucks cafés inside Target stores.

The chains are hoping the drink can drum up excitement from customers this holiday season.

I am also convinced that this is also part of the point of The Line of Beauty TBH
People have been misinterpreting Lolita since it came out and Nabokov was like "you're absolutely wrong; I wrote this to create a trap that you fell into and you should reflect on why you were so gullible about a monster."

Lote by Shola von Reinhold and A Room with a View by Forster, and then I’d immediately start talking about Forster like the other person had brought him up.
Prompt: if you had to performatively display two books that you wanted the NYT writer profiling you about your career ending scandal to notice, what would they be?
