To be clear, saying you're going to "avoid politics" is an INCREDIBLY political statement, especially in an age of fascism.

[taps the sign]: People who want to "run government like a business" are willfully ignoring the fact that almost every for-profit business that everyone *has* to use *sucks*. Cable companies, telcos, airlines, insurance companies, power companies — they're almost all awful.
I don't want to start a thing so I'll just say that there will never be a good argument for privatizing USPS. That would be like privatizing libraries. The aim of services isn't to be run for profit, they are for serving the greater good, which USPS has been extremely successful at.

They're openly calling to lock up every trans person by force. We need every ally to speak out forcefully against this because trans folks cannot do this on our own.

Obama didn’t announce his candidacy until 2007, for the 2008 election.

It’s 2025. Election is in 2028. Like… no. We don’t have to accept that Gavin is the best we can do. We gotta push for better in the time we have.

No candidate is perfect (Obama wasn’t), but we can do better than Gavin, ffs.

Some notes from the Carrollton Pre-Public hearing this evening:

Many impassioned Paratransit riders expressed serious concerns with the potential restructuring . To them, it is already a service that is struggling to meet their needs as is.

These cuts would be catastrophic for Paratransit!

Unfortunately, Android has made changes which will make it much harder for us to port to Android 16 and future releases. It will also make adding support for new Pixels much more difficult. We're likely going to need to focus on making GrapheneOS devices sooner than we expected.

hello cis friends
this is what people mean by trans genocide

if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported

this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order

it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

Yeah, that's exactly what this anti DEI purge is all about. Censoring minorities and expelling trans people out of public life.

The central objective of Trump’s foreign policy at this moment appears to be the forcible acquisition of territory at gunpoint.
I teamed up with @tparsi to analyze a possible silver-lining in the next four years of foreign policy for the @latimes — rejecting the neo-imperial “rules-based international order” meme of recent years, in favor something better rather than worse. www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...
Opinion: The improvement Trump could make to U.S. foreign policy
Donald Trump's first term, with exits from the Iran nuclear deal and Paris climate agreement, hardly showed good global governance. But here's something he could get right.

i think it is great that the press is treating this like it’s just another proposal
Rep. Brandon Gill: "Listen, I think that the people of Panama, I think that the people of Greenland, I think that the people of Canada for that matter should be honored that President Trump wants to bring these territories under the American fold."

In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

To add to this very correct post: Trans people know Dems don't care about us either.

Ordinary voters see that Dems don't care about them and it opens them up to the Republican lie that it's because Dems only care abt trans rights.

The truth is Dems don't stand for anything at all.
Ultimately Democrats vulnerability on trans rights has nothing to do with trans rights. What people hear is that Democrats care more about trans rights than their own concerns, a message that would have zero traction if they felt Democrats genuinely did care about their own concerns

FYI gyp/jip/gypped is a slur.

Yes the word you use to mean you got ripped off or scammed is a slur.

It comes from "gypsy " Another slur for the Romani people.

Maybe stop using it.

And yet UK media and the nyt dishonestly repackaged this blatantly political document.

The nyt then went out of its way to completely ignore a report in France this fall that came to much different conclusions than Cass. Why? It didn’t comport w its leaders’ political views.

A journalistic failure
Anyone reading the Cass Review should be able to see it was political, with a set end point dictated in advance. It was criticised at the time by scientists for this. Every other country’s reviews on gender affirming care has found puberty blockers are safe. Cass’ report should be binned.
An independent (2024) review commissioned by the NSW government into gender-affirming care for children has found that Puberty blockers a 'safe, effective and reversible' form of gender-affirming care.

"The Marshall Project and Los Angeles Times have identified more than 30 lawsuits regarding sleep deprivation behind bars." Important story from @keribla.bsky.social and @shannonheffernan.bsky.social:
One morning, Steven straggled into the prison shoe factory a little groggy. The prison made him be up at 2 am, so he'd only had 3.5 hrs of sleep when pushed the wrong button & a machine mangled his hand.

Here's our deep-dive into the toll of sleep deprivation in prisons and jails:
What it's like to sleep in prison: Moldy mattresses, bright lights, nonstop noise
The dangerous problem of sleep deprivation leads to a health and safety crisis in prisons and jails.
