The fact that UCC hid a 3000-year-old mummy under the floorboards of a lecture theatre on a campus where two and a half tonnes of uranium rods were being stored in a basement nearby and DIDN'T end up with a zombie-pharaoh apocalypse is both a mystery and endlessly disappointing

Just found out Leon Trotsky was one of *those* guys
According to one story, Leon Trotsky was said to have been particularly fond of a Jewish dairy restaurant called Triangle Dairy in the Bronx, whose waiters were Russian emigrés. Trotsky refused to tip after eating as a matter of principle, insisting that "tipping was demeaning to the dignity of a workingman, and that a person should get a regular salary, enough to live on, and not have to depend on tips". For the same reason, he tried to persuade other customers to refuse to tip as well. This led to verbal abuse, poor service, and one incident where waiters intentionally spilled hot soup on him.

A lot of us have grown up with Paddington, across different generations. In thinking about Paddington as a story about migration & refugees, the question is whether & why we would value fables + positive stories: this idealised narrative in a children's story about Britain as a welcoming society

a golden retriever sits smiling in the front passenger seat of a car. the window is rolled down just a couple of inches. blue skies with puffy clouds and some happy little trees are in the background. it’s a totally normal photo of a golden in a car, minus the fact that the tongue sticking out of her mouth is bright blue. you’re peering down into a styrofoam cup that was in a car’s cupholder. it is mostly empty but has some blue slushie way down at the bottom with a mysteriously tongue-shaped hole carved through the ice in one spot. the back of a golden retriever’s head is visible in the upper right corner of the photo. the dog may or may not be avoiding eye contact.
