It’s no surprise that also today a truly huge grassroots effort is delivering THOUSANDS of petitions for SB1 to be put to a public vote. From what I’m hearing, it’s been unpopular across parties and all over the state — but has been news to everyone not working in HE.

Ohio legislators passed SB1 this spring (despite massive outcry). It goes into effect today. Here’s a tiny sliver of what’s happening #highered #DEI

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.

Headed to #ICA25! In the meantime, wondering if there are any #arachnologists or #scorpion experts out there who know the species of the critter below we found in Tuscany. Italian scorpion?

Listen up! It is baby bat season! Please, please, please keep your cat indoors overnight for next few weeks. Seeing multiple cat-damaged or killed bats, some with babies attached.😪 Bats can live >20 years and have just 1 baby/year, so now's a critical time. # bats #cats #conservation #wildlife 🦇

It’s actually hard for me to imagine a more perfect nuclear weapon for kinship ties then the constant assumption of interpersonal recording without permission or consent. Is the atomic bomb of social cohesion.

One bright side to being forced to live in an AI slop tornado is now I see my artistic mistakes as incredibly endearing. The human machine of my body made that weird line. My worst day of drawing is completely untouchably better than anything AI will ever produce until the heat death of the universe

I understand the overworked prof better than most, but as institutions, schools are going to have to play a longer game—widespread adoption of these tools by profs is going to devalue what they are selling. Destabilizing education is part of their overall fascist project.

If this isn't a cautionary warning for academics then I don't know what is.
You are putting yourself one step closer to unemployment each time you use AI to write an email, synthesize literature, code any data, use the socratic method to organize ideas, or write syllabi, lectures & papers.

This week, I spoke with one of the Duolingo contractors impacted by its 'new' AI strategy, and they clarified that
1) it's not new. Duolingo has *already* fired an estimated 100 writers and translators.
2) they worked for months training an AI system that still makes egregious mistakes.
