Takeaway from PhD years: Publishing good papers doesn’t make someone a solid researcher. Academia has many big names and rising stars, hence plenty of room for disappointment: many talk about making the world a better place but, deep down, care merely about their own prestige through their actions.

So much of the absurdity in how some elites talk about Charlie Kirk—or navigate the authoritarian politics of this regime—stems from political science’s and the elite class’s fixation on polarization, and the misguided belief that it’s inherently bad and that the “remedy” is civil submission.

Perspectives on Preregistration

Nice review of the different perspectives on preregistration by Yke Bauke Eisma and Joost de Winter.

The replication crisis has accelerated the adoption of open science practices, with study preregistration having emerged as a vital, yet contested, reform. This review synthesizes the discourse surrounding preregistration into four perspectives: (1) Idealist, (2) Pragmatist, (3) Skeptic, and (4) Innovator. Idealists view preregistration as essential to hypothesis testing by separating confirmatory and exploratory analyses and preventing HARKing and p-hacking. Pragmatists highlight workable infrastructure, including templates, registries, and deviation-reporting tools, in order to integrate preregistration into actual scientific workflows. Skeptics caution about the rigidity of preregistration, administrative burden, performative compliance, and displacement of deeper problems such as weak theory, as well as opportunities to game the system. Innovators extend preregistration through Registered Reports, adaptive and versioned plans, and computationally integrated pipelines that document exploration while preserving transparency. In conclusion, the discourse surrounding preregistration is not a simple debate between proponents and opponents but an interplay of diverse perspectives, with tensions between confirmatory rigor and exploratory discovery, and between top-down policies and bottom-up reform.

They are based on nonparametric combinations of p values (e.g., Marden, 1985) across significant (p < .05) studies and are variously claimed to detect “evidential value”, “lack of evidential value”, and “left skew” in p values. We show that these tests do not have the properties ascribed to them. Moreover, they fail basic desiderata for tests, including admissibility and monotonicity. In light of these serious problems, we recommend against the use of the P-curve tests.

The association between social identification and system justification, especially amongst low-status groups, is a highly contested issue in the social and political psychology literatures. While some researchers propose that this association should be largely negative, others assume that it should be largely positive. Here, we synthesised the accumulated evidence on this relationship using a 4-level meta-analysis of 84 papers supplying 248 different samples and 359 effect sizes (Ntotal = 395,855). Overall the association between identification and system justification was positive, although weak (Zr = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.17) and was stronger for high- and intermediate-status groups (Zr = 0.19, 95% CI = 0.13, 0.25 and Zr = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.04, 0.20 respectively) but null for low-status groups (Zr = 0.01, 95% CI = −0.04, 0.06). When theoretically relevant moderators were taken into account, the results further revealed that, for low-status groups, subgroup identification was positively correlated with system justification, but only when status differences were stable and/or legitimate.

Hornsey Highlights • Extreme (vs. moderate) climate protests reduce support for the activist group. • Support was reduced via immorality, low emotional connection, and identification. • Extreme (vs. moderate) climate protests increase climate concern and intentions. • Extreme tactics may boost concern but harm activist group support. • No loss of support for the broader climate movement or cause was observed. Abstract Some members of the climate movement advocate for disruptive tactics, including mass civil disobedience, in the effort to pressure governments to address anthropogenic climate change. However, prior research on the “activist's dilemma” suggests that extreme protest actions may reduce public support for a movement. The present research aimed to discover if these findings would replicate within the highly moralised context of climate change, and explore target deservingness as a potential moderator. Across two studies, with Australian psychology students (Study 1; N=178) and a politically representative sample from the United Kingdom (Study 2; N=511), participants perceived climate activists engaging in extreme (vs. moderate) protests to be more immoral, felt less emotional connection and identification with them, and supported the movement less. However, Study 2 found that extreme (vs. moderate) protests also heightened climate concern and intentions to take climate-related actions. These findings highlight a “climate activist’s dilemma”: while extreme tactics may reduce support for the activist groups who engage in such tactics, they may simultaneously raise climate concern and personal intentions to act.
