Fun fact: Halifax is not allowed to set a speed limit below 50 km/h without permission from the province.

And the province only considers reductions to 40, not to 30, in most cases.

And the criteria includes a study of whether drivers are already driving close to 40 km/h!

I was busy all day, so I almost missed my annual snark!

But today is International Men's Day and if you did not know that, then please shut the fuck up with your angst on March 8th ✌🏻

First off, my suspension has ended. Got a little harsh with a post a few days ago but I didn’t have my feet on the ground and I’m sorry if I offended anyone. Will try to be more chipper. Knock on wood!

Thinking about how Summers and Epstein both frequently manipulated the media into giving or withholding coverage when they wanted and how the same media mysteriously decided to wage a scorched earth jihad against Harvard's President Claudine Gay. It's a strange coincidence to ponder!
Faculty discipline committees should really normalize de-tenuring/dismissal investigations for the sort of behavior described in the Summers case
A senior academic using mentoring as leverage to obtain sex is a contemptible abuser of power.

I for one really don’t want a Christmas election, but if we go that way I already know who I’m voting for.
Will the government FALL today? Are we headed for a Christmas ELECTION?

Well, we're going to find out at 6:45pmET tonight. That's when the vote is taking place, as I've confirmed with the lovely folks behind the scenes at the House of Commons.

Big day for nerds!!!!

Funny, how MAGA is *outraged* over someone who is simply a Muslim in the New York City mayor's mansion, but has no comment about a Muslim who is an actual murderer in the White House.

The New York Times obit for Alice Wong doesn’t mention Covid or Gaza

It ignores two of her biggest causes because of political bias

Alice fought tirelessly for Covid mitigations

She fought for the people of Gaza

She rightfully reminded us that the genocide in Gaza is a disability justice issue

Hum. Y'all are still making jokes about Epstein and sex trafficking with the newly added homophobic content. So, like. Congrats on being rape culture's foot soldiers, I guess.

Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Robert Strang, still hasn't told Nova Scotians that covid is primarily airborne going into year 5 of the pandemic. Our journalists and political opposition won't even ask. 🐘🤫
So judge the character and competence of public health and infection control leaders based on their actions. Yes, some require resources and buy-in. But others, such as information-sharing, are low-hanging fruit - failure there is a *choice*.

Check if yours shared the information in this thread:
From populists on the right, but also from establishment figures desperate to bury their responsibility, there's an ongoing push to bury the harms of COVID.

Long COVID alone costs 7M life-years (QALYs) and on the order of a trillion dollars a year in the OECD.

Last night, I witnessed someone nearly get run over in the Market. I used a couple bystander intervention techniques to de-escalate the situation, scold the driver and support the poor pedestrian.

I was able to do this safely and effectively because I'm trained!

I can teach you - it's free! ⬇️

Dec 6th is Canada's National Day of Action and Remembrance on Violence against Women in commemoration of the Montreal Massacre.

A staggering statistic: "North American researchers were charged over US$2.27 billion by just two for-profit publishers. The Canadian research councils and the US National Science Foundation were allocated US$9.3 billion in that year." What are we doing?
We wrote the Strain on scientific publishing to highlight the problems of time & trust. With a fantastic group of co-authors, we present The Drain of Scientific Publishing:

Cabot’s golf project planned inside Nova Scotia’s West Mabou Beach Prov Park has a fancy website. Looks like an awfully advanced backroom deal with Premier Houston’s govt. Cabot boasts it made $80,000 in monetary donations in 2024-25. Didn’t mention the many millions of public $$$$ it’s received. 🤔
U.S. billionaire financier of Cabot Links golf resort in Cape Breton is Trumpian climate denier, Mike Keiser. Now the Cabot Group wants to take West Mabou Beach provincial park for a 3rd luxury golf course in Inverness, Nova Scotia. Keiser originally got his hands on the Cabot Links land for $1. 🧵
