I’m proud to say that @noaa.gov and NCEI has released a 1 year retrospective on #Helene using ESRI Story Maps.

Here is a brief thread of how this came to be and how NOAA can still do good things (even while wearing pajamas).

For years, I've long said that climate.gov's team of remarkable communicators (& their amazing blogs, which were accessible but did not "dumb down" the science!) was NOAA's best (& most cost effective!) public-facing extreme #weather / #climate education effort to date. This will be a huge loss.
Climate.gov, a major US government website supporting public education on climate science, will likely shut down after almost all of its staff were fired. What would be worse is if the website were co-opted to publish climate denial content.

This is one the most authentic, frustrating, and alarming inside looks at what pressure, cuts and "forced" retirement have done to a critical National Weather Service forecast office. Worth a read to illustrate what many of us have been saying

It’s important to contextualize this. That it was staffed fully is good. That the employees even have to worry about staffing is terrible. NWS Offices should be empowered to do their job to the fullest, not scramble to staff up hours or days ahead of crisis. That is NO way to run an organization.

The thing about tools like cli-MATE and ACIS is not that the data won't exist (not yet at least). It's that they make getting the information you want so...efficient.

Can I write some code to do the same task? Sure, but not everyone can, and why should we need to when a great tool already exists?
Some news. Those of you that utilize the cli-MATE tool from the Midwest Regional Climate Center will no longer have access unless funding is restored before the 17th.

A huge loss.

One of a meteorologist’s biggest pet peeves is “my app says it’ll be ____”. Weather apps can miss so many details that a meteorologist will know.

Let’s use tomorrow in NYC — my app says it’ll be 78 degrees but rainy. But is that the full story? Spoiler alert… no, it’s not!
