I know we all love a dose of hopium, especially now. But the take, which I see all across here, that the far right was defeated in Germany tonight because 80% of Germans voted for other parties is very misleading and unhelpful. Understanding this really matters. 🧵

It's not finished. This is just the outline. But I wrote about why North England is poor. Which it really really is. tomforth.co.uk/whynorthengl...
Why North England is poor.
And why Thatcher is partly to blame, but not in the way most people argue.

It's Friday. I'd like to take a moment to tweet something positive that an overarching political apparatus like Europe's allows: enhanced cross-border cooperation.

(ooooh, that woke you up, didn't it!)

The current attack-point for exceptionalists blaming Europe for the consequences of the UK's Brexit decision is "No negotiation without notification".

This was the Union's and the member states' insistence that we would not negotiate with the UK outside of the Article 50 process.

It may not be fashionable to say, but Schengen is one of the EU's truly great achievements

So I wrote a blog on why:

Given this week’s events Assad's regime is finished & it’s a race to Damascus. The Russian position in Syria, and MENA region writ large is consequently in deep trouble, because of Syria’s importance as a logistics hub for Russian operations. Short thread. 1/

In the wake of the 2008 crash, I really wanted a referendum about how Ireland's public finances work.

Should we be a high tax, high service country where you pay a lot, but there's great health care, childcare, etc.

Or a low tax, low service country? Private insurance, etc

Oh we have pinned posts now!

Alright well I'm Kyle, a Canadian gamedev in Scotland.

I just released my first title, Farewell North, a wee indie game where you play as a border collie restoring colour to your human's world.

I'm usually writing shaders and stories that make you feel things ✨

My superpower is that when TV producers ask me to come on TV and talk about something, i say 'no' unless i'm actually an expert.

Then i confuse them further by pointing them to someone who is.

My column in today's FT: some thoughts on why the UK's 'defend British culture' warriors both struggled to define English or British culture and why if you care about British culture, you need to defend the BBC:
There is such a thing as British culture
That is why politicians of all stripes should be wary of undermining the BBC
