American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

As I have been predicting
"I have been on two humanitarian-esque missions with the guard, which were awesome, doing the things you see on the commercial, helping these communities," says J. "And then you want me to go pick up trash and dissuade homeless people in D.C. at gunpoint. Like, no dude.“

As President Trump's call for National Guard deployments rings out across the U.S., a small contingent of Ohio guard members is quietly expressing concern in an encrypted group chat.

Democrats simply not getting the ACA subsidies back is, from a messaging and electoral strategy perspective, preferable to having this vote. It wasn't even something they should have been asking for.

Susan Collins, for example, is no doubt very happy to have a standalone vote on it where she can then say she voted to restore the subsidies even though it won't actually do anything.

They already had this, when they passed axing ACA credits. There's no ambiguity that Republicans did that and you can attack them for it. The marginal advantage of having another vote for messaging purposes is, at best, extremely thin, and even negative if it lets some Rs cast a meaningless yes vote
Kaine on why he thinks just getting a vote on healthcare is a win: "We're the minority party, but everybody will get to see who is standing for them when it comes to lowering their healthcare costs"

Sorry, the sudden cold is my fault. Satan, who controls Chicago weather, likes to make it as miserable as possible whenever I'm about to get on a plane from LA back to Chicago to try to get me to quit my job and become a professional beach metal detector scavenger to not have to live in the Midwest.

We gave them the victories they’ve been asking for and they turned around and gave up as soon as it was convenient. The carrot days of the Democratic base are over. Time for the stick. They’re not afraid enough of us. We can fix that (with votes).
