I wrote a zine a few years ago about risk-taking for academics. The argument of the zine was that all social action is risky. The question is what consequences you as an individual willing and able to face.

Choosing to take action requires knowing your vulnerabilities, values, and options.

My Slate piece on the widespread NEH grant cancellations is live. So much gratitude to everyone who took the time to talk with me these past few days while fighting fires on every side.

for the first time since I started this job last spring, I had an opportunity to work on something with my friend who referred me to this role. definitely a mood improvement to get to work with a friend (even though work, in general, is a necessary but not ideal use of my one wild and precious life)

I cannot, during these horrific times, recommend enough the importance of making pockets of time to just do things that are not related to anything but the joy of being alive and playing. You need it. You do. It will keep you whole. Which we need. We need you whole.

Alaska Airlines flight attendants are in ongoing negotiations with the airline for a fair contract. I asked what passengers could do to help & they said to share kudos to the flight teams at alaskalistens(dot)com. So if you fly AS and have a positive experience, that’s something small + meaningful
