This is specifically about AI use in humanities disciplines within academia, which is clear from context- this crap is extremely harmful in that setting. Inevitably, people show up to be like "AI finds cancer cells tho".

NOT THE SUBJECT, and that conflation has been inflicted upon us intentionally.
You absolutely will not convince a bunch of historians and sociologists and whoever else is in this thread that you know more than we do about this and we should use it. I wish you AI enthusiasts would stop wading into our conversations. You have nothing helpful to contribute and are snarky.

A few thoughts on why the latent popularity of car-free living hasn’t translated to the funding changes necessary to make it possible:

The millions of people who would like to drive less aren’t organized, so elected officials rarely hear from them, allowing the car-dominated status quo to fester.

Prins Hendrikkade, Amsterdam in 1980 and today. Once multiple car lanes with a thin painted bike lane next to car parking. Now completely car-free outside Centraal station - only trams, walking and bikes, with a wide cycleway and generous footways.

In the Netherlands, over 40% of rail passengers arrive by bike. Since 2012 the country has invested €400m+ to add 200,000 new bike parking spaces at stations. The result? More rail use, fewer car trips, lower congestion and emissions, better public health - and far more efficient use of urban space.

In the Netherlands, you will often see paths such as this one. Separated, wide, and surrounded by greenery. By making cycling infrastructure safe and enjoyable, it is less of a hurdle to travel by bike.

Before (2017) / After (2025) the bidirectional cycle track on the Allée du Bord de l'Eau, in Bois de Boulogne, 3 km outside away from the périphérique of Paris, but still administered by Paris. In 2020 they put yellow paint and plastic bollards there, and in 2025 they upgraded it like this.
