Colorado governor’s new executive order will condition municipalities’ receipt of $100 million in state grants on those cities’ compliance with state housing laws, including:
—Allowing ADUs
—Eliminating parking requirements near transit
—Denser zoning districts near transit
Gov. Polis will shut off millions in state grants to cities and counties that don’t comply with state housing policies
The governor issued an executive order Friday requiring local governments to show they’re enacting policies to encourage more housing in order to qualify for transportation and energy funds.

California does environmental review for housing twice: first when a city is updating its planning and zoning to decide what you can build, and again when someone proposes a project—even if it follows the rules. This blocks housing, slows building, and increases costs. We should just do it once!
CA's prohousing caucus has thrown down gauntlet: No more CEQA, period, for any housing project on an infill site (up to 20 acres!) that complies with applicable general plan & zoning standards.

A decisive break w/ "everything bagel" tradition!

With higher ed under attack at the federal level, it’s more important than ever to make California colleges and universities affordable. The only way to get there is to end the student housing shortage.

In this thread, I'll be sharing California YIMBY's 2025 legislative package. We are supporting an excellent group in legislators in running one of the most ambitious pro-housing agendas in California history—and this is only the beginning.

If we're handing out CEQA and Coastal Act exemptions for homebuilding in the event of an emergency, maybe we should consider that virtually all of California is in a state of perpetual housing emergency.

Newer housing is so scarce that it's a luxury, therefore we need to ban all new housing construction because developers only build luxury housing
America's housing stock is the oldest it's ever been and just keeps getting older. We don't have enough homes in this country and too much of what we have is dated and decaying.

The California version of climate change denialism:

- Make it hard to build housing in climate-safe cities where people drive less.

- Make it easy to build car-dependent sprawl in exurban wildfire country.

- Forbid home insurance companies from charging enough to cover the risks to those homes.
"Consumer advocates" upset about the way insurance is priced in every functioning market across the United States.

Blue state NIMBYism is a national political crisis.
According to the Brennan Center, on current trends the 2030 census will lead to a shift of 12 Electoral Votes from states won by Harris to states won by Trump.

That means Dems would have to add at least four of PA, MI, WI, NC, GA or AZ to get to 270. NV might be needed as well.
How Congressional Maps Could Change in 2030
Newly released data from the Census Bureau points at big shifts in state representation in the House after the 2030 census.

Big takeaway from the recent trajectory of CA / federal politics: "If the political coalition in favor of liberal democracy cannot govern effectively and prove itself capable of addressing crises like the housing shortage, then they will only make illiberalism look even more seductive."
