It's time once again for my annual #treebybike post. This is the 12/19/42 cover of @newyorker.com, so one full year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. This would be the first real Christmas alone, or without a family member, for millions in the US. Gas and tire rationing had begun earlier that year.🗃️

“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”
Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnish’ed with car-related fatalities.

Priorities.
Once it really sinks in, that cyclists and pedestrians are actually real people - taxpayers and all, not to mention a potential burden on the local hospital - this approach is just plain common sense.

I was wondering, what will happen with these bikes. And here is the answer : proprietary parts/servicing.
it feels like like they made a gamble on proprietary parts/servicing and that just wasn't sustainable in a boom with major consumer surplus

IMPORTANT: The Dutch invest €595 million annually on urban biking, resulting in €19 BILLION saved in public health care costs alone. That’s how smart governments do the math on investing in better mobility.

Let’s be clear— it wastes public money to NOT do it.

Most of these 1500+ OV-fiets bikes at Utrecht Centraal are returned at night. They'll ALL be checked out again tomorrow.

Because of high demand, OV-fiets are only available to people who are registered transit users.

Rain storms wash those tire shards into streams and ultimately into lakes and oceans. That’s bad news for fish and other aquatic life.

Lets be honest, taking a bicycle on a train is an absolute pain in the arse, even folding ones. It’s difficult to get them on and off, the storage is extremely poor, and buying tickets is way too complicated.

It didn’t need to be this way, that used to put them in a guards van. Wide doors, simple
