The core starting point for understanding the 2024 election: the country moved heavily toward Trump *except* where voters heard the most from Kamala Harris.

The Harris campaign was incredibly effective, but she still lost. If we want to do better, we have to look outside campaign operations.
Why Kamala Lost
Campaigns work, but they only work on the margins

IMO the only realistic way through the gerrymandering problem is to eventually build the political will for national algorithmic districting.

Independent commissions have failed. The VRA has been perverted to *increase* gerrymandering in many places, and anyway it has been gutted by Republicans.
Indiana Republicans have unveiled their proposal to re-gerrymander the congressional map & expand their current 7-2 majority to 9-0.

The Dem-held 1st would flip to Trump+12 & the 7th to Trump+19. All 7 GOP seats would be at least Trump+18.

imo if you want to get back in power your slogan should be "If you elect us we will prosecute everyone in government who has violated the law"

Yeah, there's only one way to restrict leaders so severely that they can't do bad things: restrict them so they can't do anything.

At some point, you have to empower leaders to act. And if you elect bad leaders, they will act badly.

You have to, as a society, choose better people to hold power.
I think their sentiment was broadly that they couldn't engineer every conceivable bulwark against electing a wretched human, and that if we did we'd have more existential problems than any one abuse pattern. And, well...

Seems obvious that just like we had a factional war within the administration over tariffs back in April we’re seeing a factional war now over Venezuela.

"I have decided in my head that I dont want this to be true, so I will pretend it's not without any proof" is a very popular kind of right-wing reply to any news about the Trump regime.

We should treat these comments with the derision they deserve.

Creating a military conflict with Venezuela gives this administration a legal "hook" to invoke the Alien Enemies Act. In other words, the foreign war is being manufactured in order to facilitate court deference for its domestic mass deportation policy. It's a Stephen Miller Special.

The cause of this problem is not a mystery. Look at what has happened historically when Democrats speak earnestly and with moral confidence.

No, I'm not telling you what happened. Consider for yourself how this played out. Because it's something that very much *has* happened in my lifetime.
I maintain that if Democrats could learn to talk with one-half of the plain spoken moral sense of Republicans who have turned on Trump, like this Indiana Republican who refuses to redistrict on the president’s command, they’d win 400 electoral votes dailyjournal.net/2025/11/26/s...

In case you’re wondering why Pete Hegseth is freaking out about a congressional video reminding the military not to participate in illegal orders:
To put a finer point on this whole thing: "Two people with direct knowledge of the operation" — presumably uniformed military leaders — are accusing the U.S. Secretary of Defense of personally ordering specific war crimes. That's a historic accusation.
Textbook war crime/extrajudicial killing

"Two survivors were clinging to the smoldering wreck. The Special Operations commander overseeing the Sept. 2 attack ... ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions."

The people pointing out this is yet another example of Republicans only taking bigotry seriously when it affects them directly are right—but this state senator is still showing more spine and self-respect than most Republicans these days. It’s an extremely low bar but also, this is a good sign.

Every single congressional Democrat needs to be out there, right now, insisting that Pete Hegseth resign right now and announcing that he will be held accountable for committing war crimes.

If you do not demand accountability here and now, they will only become more emboldened.
Exclusive: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave an order to “kill everybody” in the first strike on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. After two men survived, the mission commander ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions, according to two sources.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a verbal order to kill all crew members in the Sept. 2 strike on a suspected drug boat. Navy SEALs fired a second missile.

I don’t think people outside of healthcare realize how much AAP is standing out as a moral backbone of medicine right now, especially in pediatrics. There is so much fear at institutions. Seeing an org directly and repeatedly targeted refuse to budge an inch is extraordinary.
AAP: ‘Stop wasting government resources to amplify false claims’ about vaccines, autism
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its website to include false claims linking vaccines and autism, prompting a swift rebuke from the AAP and other medical experts.

my dissertation was about the history of Catholic converts in the US and every day something makes me remember how often I was told it was too niche
My dissertation turns 10 next month and I've been dipping in to see if there's anything in there worth pulling out and working with, and each chapter is effectively about a different emotional struggle that would be familiar today.

I guess my main feeling is: this is what Donald Trump & JD Vance wanted. They wanted members of our armed forces dead.

That's why they created meaningless deployments. That's why they hyped up nonexistent threats for months - to maximally expose US troops to danger hoping someone would get killed.

He won a majority *with the entire dem party rooting against him the entire time*. Twat.
Also, when you say people saying "Dems would win everywhere with a Mamdani-style platform," I think it's important to remember that that platform delivered the most charismatic candidate in recent history a whopping 50.4% of the vote against a street vigilante and actual vampire, in New York City
